Hi everyone,
I have a question I couldn't figure out yet. Finnish universities fare relatively well in international rankings - but I haven't found a single Finnish University of Applied Sciences (UAS) in an international ranking. Why is that?
- QS, Times and Shanghai don't rank any Finnish UAS: https://www.study.eu/best-universities/finland
- US News doesn't rank any UAS: https://www.usnews.com/education/best-g ... ect=&name=
- CWTS Leiden doesn't rank any UAS: http://www.leidenranking.com/ranking/2019/list
Now, those rankings tend to look a lot at research output and citations, and I know that isn't the focus of most of the Finnish polytechnics. But given the overall quality of the Finnish higher education system, it feels odd that not a single UAS would make it into the world's top 1,250 institutions (Times ranks 1,258!) in at least one of those big five rankings!
Is this really a reflection of the UAS' performance against the ranking metrics, or is there another reason behind it? E.g. a concerted effort of the UAS requesting to be removed from international rankings?
Interested to hear to opinions!
Finnish UAS in international rankings?
Re: Finnish UAS in international rankings?
Saying that research isn't the focus of UAS is like saying that going fast isn't the focus of tractors. And when the metrics are lap time, acceleration and low weight, then the tractor won't fare well when you put sports cars in order from best to worst.ankkaankka wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 11:43 amHi everyone,

Re: Finnish UAS in international rankings?
Overall presumed quality of the education sector is based on a system and wide accessibility to decent education (think about "the average"), not having peaks. As you said, rankings are based much on research performance, I doubt UAS carry out any meaningful research.
