Paperworkwise - You have to go to an insurance company and get a car insurance, you get a sticker you go to an inspection station with the sticker and the "owners part" and register the car to your own name. After that ypu'll get soon in the mail the car tax form and the insurance bill. (not paying either will cause the police to take your plates off when they stop you on the road and you will be a pedestrian then).

What you want to make sure is the car is inspected and taxes have been paid for. And the person selling it is the person whose name is in the title. Double tires of course should be included (with rims) and the winter tires have thread on them. There are places the car can be taken for a check-up but that costs. You can also query the data of the car from the registry to see who has owned it and the possibly reported mileages.

The insurance company will do this for 10 or 15 Euros for you. Saves a visit to the inspection station.

Tax depends on the age of the car, insurance depends on what kind of insurance you get of course, and what size the car is and where you live.
You can count something like 300-500 in costs per year for the mandatory stuff. It all depends.

I am looking to buy a new car from a dealer. Can anyone provide me with links to car buying web sites in Finland? Is it possible to buy a car through the internet? For example, in the US there are many web sites like edmunds.com or autobytel.com to help you research car models as well as provide referrals to auto dealers near you. Are there any web sites like this in Finland?

Thanks! :D

Maybe you can find one here: http://www.huuto.net
(But the sensible answer is "no")

These are a good place to start:

I mean you go to a importer's website and look at the price there and that is the price... there might be some specials, like giving in air conditioning and mag wheels, but if you want to buy a Mercedes or Honda, you go to Veho, if you want to buy a Ford or a VW you go to Stockmann-Auto, if you want a Fiat or Lada you go to Medivire..

Buying a car is not a "deal" here. Besides which the price drops 20-25% the minute you drive it out of a showroom...

One reminder to all car-buyers: you *must* register the car to your name within 7 days, and get an insurance. If you buy a car from someone and decide to register and insure it "in the spring", you'll get hit with 200% car insurance + fines + whatnot even you had stored it in a garage. Its a mustmustmustmust. Don't "think"... Finnish insurance & car tax laws are draconian.

Hello guys. Two weeks ago, we bought a secondhand car. We went to an inspection station and register it to my name, and also we made the insurance there. We allready received the insurance bill, and allready paid it. But still nothing for the tax. Do we have to go somewhere and ask or what? How long time we have to wait? Thanks

P.P. Sorry for my bad English.

The tax bill comes... within a month usually. It has otions there to pay once up to 4 times a year. You choose one way changing it will then require contacting AKE. Now did you get the car papers with your current address - some people forget to do the official move and the car tax paper goes to the old adress which is "in the computer".

Yes, we got the papers with my names and address on it. If, normally, they come within one month, then we have to wait still. We made the registration 10 days ago. Thank you, Pursuivant.
I have one more question. The car is with old registration plates, (without the blue area and the EU and FI symbols, on it). Can we drive it out of Finland now, or we have to change the plates, first? Where we can read that kind of information? Thanks again.

You just need to have a (FIN) sticker in the back
