Very clunky translation, but:

One who is good to another
Brings/receives blessing for himself

>>Joka toiselle hyvää suopi
se itsellensä siunausta tuopi <<

A person who wishes well to others
brings blessings for himself

suopi = suo ( in standard Finnish )

The basic form is "suoda" and it means :

tuopi = tuo ( in standard Finnish )

the basic form is "tuoda" and it means :

joka = who

If the "toisele" is the original spelling, its a verse of say 1800's "biblical" Finnish.

Who grants others good
receives blessings himself

Would expect something like this in a greeting card, or wallhanging or painted in some older furniture.

Translations for my little poem

Post by E Larsen » Fri Sep 17, 2004 1:51 pm

Kiitos to those who provided translations for my poem. I found it on a wall hanging in my gransmother's attic. She emigrated from Finland 100 years ago--perhaps she had brought it with her. Thank you, Hank W, for the information on word origins as well.

Maybe I should rename myself "Lovejoy"... not that much off in the age assumption. Wallhanging, eh? It may have been hers she made it herself or it might be a family heirloom handed down.

There is a slightly different version of the proverb here :

http://www.cc.jyu.fi/~juhvain/Sananlaskuja.htm

luopi = "luo" in standard Finnish

the basic form is "luoda" and it means "to create".
