I found a very good website with all the finnish slang words, a nice read for those of you who have nothing else better to do during the day or those that wanna impress their finnish mates in that trendy bar in downtown helsinki! :lol: !!

Ha, you'll enjoy this: http://koti.mbnet.fi/joyhan/keitti.htm
"kitchen swedish" of the 19th century :lol:

The site is excellent, has a 3-generation slangi 1910/slangi 1950/slangi 1970/finnish dictionary among other things.

Some of the words are used still today, I can pretty well a 1960's, but modern kids=??? and my dad's 1920's streetspeak is about as bizarre as Estonian tv...

Actually, I'd say some words in that "kyökkisuomi" are like "everyday" words.

alkovi, duffeli, henkari, henkselit, limu, muki, panta, ruksi, tarakka, ämpäri...

henkkari - henkilökortti - Identification papers
henkselit - braces (hold up pants)
limu - soft drink
muki - mug
panta - collar eg for a dog

..next person's turn.

If you can't find it in the dictionary, use google and make an educated guess.

amppari = ampiainen = wasp (ampiainen is also the name of a cocktail drink, probably the reason I know this word hmmm :oops: )

...don't know about "ruksi, tarakka"; anyone?

Ruksi is a cross that looks like an X, a.k.a. "rasti". As everybody knows, you're supposed to use those - instead of "ticks"/"checks" - on Finnish questionnaires. The one that looks like a plus sign is called "risti". Those Veikkaus people have it all mixed up though.

What was the other one left? Oh yes, tarakka. That's a cargo rack (on a bicycle or moped).

Ämpäri then...

...is just about the same as "sanko" = pail or bucket.

here you see the importance of long and short letters!

henkari = hängare= coathanger
henkkari = henkilöllisyystodistus= ID

Portsari kysyy henkkarii ja ottaa palsan hengariin.

(the bouncer asks for the ID and hangs(takes) the overcoat into the hanger)
