Hi everybody,
My name is Luther. I'm from Westminster Massachusetts. I'm tring to teach myself Finnish from a text book and two useless cassettes that only read out some cornny dialoge, not the vocab lists! So as a result I can read and write Finnish much better than speaking or listening! I don't have satalite tv or anything like that, so I can't get Finnish programs. Aren't there any educational videos out there somewhere?!? I'm starting to get a bit discouraged
Haluan puhua ja ymmärtä Suomea!
Hey Luther...fellow Mass person here ( although I live in Finland now). There are 2 CD ROM products I have seen on Amazon (PC and Mac) which I have heard are pretty good.

This one isn't too bad. Its got a book with some good stuff in it and 2 tapes plus 2 CDs (and the CDs are different than the tapes). On the CDs they have a lot of dialogues that are not written in the book, so it forces you to listen, repeat, and make replies in colloquial dialogue. I thought it SUCKED at first because it was hard! But thats helpful when you get some skills under your belt already, and its time for a challange. And the speakers they chose certainly did not slow down for the recording ... they blast right through everything! Its a bit pricey, but might help you out on your listening skills.

If not, you can always buy some good Finnish music and try your luck with that. I know when I was learning Spanish I went out and bought 2 Shakira CDs which have become my favorites and it helps with pronounciation because songs are much more fun to listen to than just endless dialogue. Then you can work on singing along, (you can do this when alone or in the car if you can't sing like me). Although, you have to be careful with music because depending on the artist, they may use the words in an artistic way that you would otherwise never hear spoken in conversation. So not a great tool for learning grammar. I have a few Neljä Ruusua CDs that I listen to a lot. I like their music and I actually memorized a few of their songs all the way through before even knowing what I was actually saying.

Miksi leivänpaahtimissa on asetus, jolla leivän saa palaneeksi korpuksi, ettei sitä kukaan syö?

The good news is that if you can read and write Finnish, you can say it, since the correspondence between the written and spoken language is basically 1:1! There's only one way to pronounce things, so you're halfway there!redgreen wrote:Hi everybody,

There is a speech synthesizer of Finnish at : http://www.mikropuhe.com/demo.asp
Write a word or sentences in the text field, then click on "Kuuntele puhe"!
The synthesizer is very good at pronouncing separate words. If it says a whole sentence there is always something wrong with the accent but it is very easy to understand what it says.

Some sentences it does magnificently, though.
