Never been to Tampere myself so I wont recite anything what I've heard about the area. Google image search is your friend. Those pictures will say something to you

I lived in Hervanta for the first 6 months that I lived in Finland. I didn't enjoy it, but I know a lot of people who do...

TOAS put us into a really old, icky apartment building that only had foreign students in it (we were the ones who couldn't see what we were renting before we moved). Since the Finns wouldn't live there, they allowed the city to rent the rest of the apartments, so there was quite a mix of interesting drunk people in the building.

My biggest problem with Hervanta was that it was a good 45 minute bus ride into town (I was attending the University of Tampere at the time).

On the bright side... there are a lot of young people--mainly students. Yes, people speak English. The place has been built up a lot since I lived there and there are a lot of companies now based in Hervanta (to be close to the University)

But, it still take 45-60 minutes to take the bus into Tampere.

Hei! I live in Hervanta for a year already, and I am quite satisfied. The infrastructure is great here, there is everything you need - supermarkets, banks, post office, hospital, farmacy, swimming pool, EVERYTHING!
There are a lot of foreigners here, so the chance for finding someone from your country is really high. Besides, it means that almost everybody knows at least a bit of English. There is the University here, so there are many students, but it is not a problem at all if you live not in the dorm.
The bus from Hervanta to the downtown takes 16 minutes, and not 45, as someone here mentioned. Besides, there are several buses running to the downtown, so every 8-10 minutes there is one.
It's really a lovely place, as there are 3 lakes nearby, and there is a lot of space for picnics.

Bram, I know someone from Singapore living in Tampere :) If you make me satay, nasi goreng, rojak and roti prata, I will hook you guys up! hehehehe.. :)

Hi,

I can try to cook satay, nasi goreng n rojak..but not prata. It's too complicated :D. And for making rojak, there are difficulties also...I think it's too difficult to find brown coconut sugar there...

I take the bus every day, and it takes 10-25 minutes to the centre depending on the time of day and whereabouts in Hervanta you hop in.

Overall, Hervanta isn't the prettiest part of Tampere, but it has everything you need, and the centre is only a short bus ride away. There is no way the bus takes 45 minutes even during rush hours.
