Uh ? There is a big respect for classical music in this country, and there are definitly some first class classical-orchestras, such as Tapiola Sinfonietta. Also, there is a world-famous festival of opera, during the month of July, in Savonlinna.

Some classical musicians are often invited for TV talk-shows : the big fat guy with long beard (composer and conductor), Pekka Kuusisto (young violin soloist), and others. Some classical musicians are world-wide famous and have great career out of Finland, such as some opera singers, or Esa Pekka Salonen, composer and conductor at the Los Angeles Philharmonic. And those people have studied music in Finland, because this country provides good teaching of it.

Soooo... this little intuition of yours could hardly have been more wrong

Haven't posted here in an absolute age!! But never mind all that!!

I check http://www.pollstar.com every now and then to see if there are any gigs in Helsinki, Stockholm or any of the big Scandinavian cities. I saw last week that Sigur Ros (Icelandic band - of you've not heard of them, then go and buy all their albums!!) are playing Helsinki at the end of October. I was shocked to see that it was sold out. All tickets went on the first day too!! :?

I knew they are good, but I'd not realised that they had a sell out following here in Finland. I saw them supporting Radiohead a few years ago and I was hooked.

i recently bought a "Diablo" (why do you choose such a name??) album and it was really good. technical hardcore metal, not to far from the gothenburg sound (at the gates, haunted, soilwork, arise and other clones).
actually it took me 4-5 songs before they slapt my in the face with a "voi perkele" til i understood that they were finns.

Kinda like "aw crap", but not offensive in the least. Maybe "aw crud"
would be more appropriate, but I tend to say "voi kökkö" in the same
places I would say "awwww crap!" in English.

I´m a huge THE RASMUS fan too, even the first finnish band I discovered was HIM.....
I like also Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Entwine, Lullacry, Charon, Negative, Lovex, Uniklubi, Apocalyptica,Private Line...
In Spain I got the chance to see Apocalyptica and HIM. Also The Rasmus.
When I was in Finland for a holiday, I got the chance to see live The Rasmus again, and discover bands like Damn Seagulls, Disco Ensemble, Zen Cafe, Apulanta, and LAB.
The thing is in Finland there is always concerts and great bands to discover, and most of them about rock music and unfortunately this does not happen in Spain.
Thanx to Finnish bands I´m learning finnish too, I did a Finnish introductory course for one month in Barcelona and learning on my own via Internet!
