Laurea or Metropolia better?
Re: Laurea or Metropolia better?
when i sat for the Finnish exam it was quite easy, we had just the basics, but that was years ago, now its much more intense, you should at least write and understand well, i think the reason being that after two months of the studies they start clinical practices which of course you should understand Finnish to be able to communicate with the patient.
If you wish to convince people of something, it is more useful to be entertaining than to be right

It was very basic a few years ago. I don't think it has changed that much since. You obviouly need Finnish but a ot of the DPN sudents can't speak it and still manage just fine in their practice. I had numerous "arguments" about this with my practice tutors. They are not to grade your language skills (as in you are not studying for a BA in Finnish but for a BA in Nursing/Social Services), as long as you try your best to communicate with your patients, are not shy to use your Finnish even if it is very basic and that you show your eagerness to learn then it is what matters.

Hello,
The Finnish exam that they will give now is different from the one I took when I applied at Metropolia back in 2006. One of the teachers, recently said that it has been made more difficult, because as somebody mentioned before it is very important that you know some Finnish before you go on your clinical placements.
The test I took was very simple but I had studied Finnish previously for 3 years. However, some students who could not speak Finnish at all and who had only studied it for the test, passed. I think if you have studied from a language text book you will pass. So, that includes having a basic vocabulary, knowing the personal pronouns, knowing how to conjugate verbs, possessive suffixes, knowing the past tense, knowing how to say in, on, at, from, to etc. There is also an English language test. The most difficult test was the one about the book of nursing ethics.
Oh and about your original question: I applied at both Laurea and Metropolia. After going to each test and checking out both schools and being accepted by both, i picked Metropolia. It suited me better and I have not regretted my decision. We even had to go to Laurea for lectures once and the experience made me glad for my original decision.
You just have to see for yourself, apply at both places and get the feel of them.

Like every other person have psoted here, I cannot tell you which school to choose. I graduated from Metropolia (Nursing) and not once have I regretted it. Like AnjaSmith mentioned, there were challenges and I tell you, every school has its own share. I agree with Amadine, our lecturers English was always understandable and we had no problem concerning the language. There's not much I can tell you about Laurea. I do have friends who attended that school and I have the same experience like AnjaSmith had with her own friends.
I did the entrance examination about 6 years ago. The Finnish language exam was easy. I remember very well there was a short essay and few questions based on the essay. So since SediaAmore mentioned that she recently heard the Finnish language exam has been made more difficult, I suggest you practice and study harder. Good luck.
