Today I received the 6th automatic email from Migri that my application is waiting to be processed (Hakemus odottaa käsittelyä / Waiting for processing ) applied October 1st and queue number 5218 . Customer number 12267/310/2023 . Now I start to have a feeling my application is on the long queue , even though I’m married to Finnish citizen and my daughter is Finnish and I work as a manager . Hard luck 🤕
I dont want to be a party pooper, but i guess migri doesn't look at applications that way. i came here in 2014 for my phd and since then i have been working as an assistant professor. i passed yki, never been on kela, and i dont have any records what so ever, i dont even own a car haha. still i have been waiting for 18 months. i know a guy who came here as an asylum seeker, never worked in finland, and proved his language skills with a course certificate (which is always seen as trying to go around the system in finland) and still his application was processed in 20 months. i hope you get you positive decision soon, also i believe 6 month is not that long waiting period. best of luck!

Honestly, I don't even understand anymore what do they look at it then??

Do they check do you have strong ties? How much stronger it can get from having a Finnish spouse and a child?
Do they check how financially independent and strong you are and how much are you contributing to country? Fine, someone has PHD and waiting for 2 years almost.

Is it totally random then? Do they play lottery to choose which application to proceed quickly?

This is SOOO unfair and annoying that I think it is on purpose.

Still waiting... "good news" - it reaches 22 months . Applied in the middle of june 2022, now the queue is 13xx .
As for the way Migri processes the applications... well, it is uncertain. I was trying to see trending in csv file (kudos to just_passing_by  ) but
it looks like there are some internal criterias that affect when the certain application will be taken for processing. There are lot of 2022 apps were processed in 2023 (august - december), also some apps where processed being in , say, queue number 3000-4000 and , at some apps with queue number 500-1000. At the same time queue number 300 - 600 are still in pending status...
Some apps before me with queue number 2000-3000 , some apps after me were processed 2-5 months ago...
I don't know, it looks like a kind of rotating drum randomly choosing the numbers :D so worth sitting back, relax and see
What is your diary number? They process around 4200-4600/310/2022 these days

I'm happy to announce that I got my citizenship!

I was very worried about processing time because I came without a residence permit and applied for one in Finland. My previous experience with Migri had been very disappointing and unfair, so I thought I would be one of those who would have to wait for years. We also had many (maybe 20-30) short trips around the world, but no trips longer than 30 days. I applied for citizenship a little earlier, then 4 years requirement was fulfilled (3 month earlier).
But my husband came with type A residence permit in Feb 2019.
We are both highly paid Software Developers, no Kela support, no criminal records.

Arrived to Finland: June 2019
Got study based B permit: October 2019
Got work based A permit: May 2020
Applied for citizenship: 19.10.2023, no need to visit service point
Application moved to stage 2: 15.04.2024
Got decision: 16.04.2024

My husband applied the same day, but was obliged to visit. He proved his identity on 24.10 and our applications were linked. After that we got diary numbers. My diary number was 13118 and his was 13233. My husband got his decision some minutes later than me.

I don't get that priority !"#¤% in decision-making. When our applications are piled up from 2022 they spend their resources to process new applications faster. Then "somehow" estimated processing times approach 30 months. What a clown world.

Probably you have a complex case. Don't forget, getting citizenship is not a right but a privilege. Even meeting all criteria does not necessarily mean that they cannot reject.

If you have permanent residence, you are pretty much covered anyway.

What would you prefer? that the easy to process applications just queue up behind the harder ones where information is hard to verify and more research is needed. That would mean that EVERYONE would wait over 2 years for their application to be processed.

Oh yeah. When the application goes to second stage after years somehow the decision is granted on the same day. Do you believe they were researching during those years?

This case actually destroys two myths:
1. Applying earlier than 4 years of residence does not mean that you will end up waiting in the long queue.
2. Coming to Finland without Residence with a tourist visa does not mean that you will end up waiting in the long queue.

The migri calculator asks whether you came to Finland without Residence permit, but in reality it is probably asking whether you came to Finland as a refugee/asylum seeker.

There you go!

"I am paying back taxes and Kela (study support) based on agreed payment plan. I am ahead of payment plan. Does it have negative impact on decision-making?"

Well, it does affect how your application is handled.
