When dual citezenship abolishment law might go in force?

Post by TUserFin » Sat Jan 06, 2024 10:35 am

In 2025 finnish gov will review results of dual-citezenship project. When this might become a law, in practice that it will not be possible to get citezenship without abolishing your current citezenship?

This is a review, because some dual citizenships are problematic for obvious reasons.

What changes might occur will depend on the result of the review.

So, you think it might be +2 years after Spring 2025 to prepare law etc?

If the review recommends changes, it is possible (but unlikely) that such changes become law as early as 2024.

If such changes affect people who already have dual citizenship, there will have to be a grace period for them to choose which citizenship they want to keep.

Right now it is unclear whether anything will change regarding dual citizenship.

Thanks, do you mean changes will become law in 2025 not 2024? Because, according to project timeline in 2024 they plan only to have studies about this and present results to parliament in 2025.

According to the news at least, the conversation seems to be focusing more and more on Russian-Finnish dual citizenship rules.

That's regarding the citizenship test, which has a clear roadmap.

The loyalty conflict of dual citizenship with countries with whom Finland might soon be at war (like Russia or Afghanistan) is something that might depending on the circumstances be considered an urgent matter.

Well as for now it does not look like an urgent matter, also most of RU dual citezenship holders are female.

Here what project says

According to the government program, the study on the dual citizenship system will be carried out in 2024. The preparation of changes to the law on dual citizenship will be decided upon completion of the study

So feels like it will be presented only in 2025

It's really impossible to predict what will happen, and when.

The citizenship test is part of the government programme, and it has a roadmap.
That's mostly technical questions like contents and who does the test.

Changes to dual citizenship are far more complicated, but might at some point become an urgent issue.

If any changes happen to dual citizenship it might not even matter much when it happens, since such a change would likely after a transition period revoke the Finnish citizenship of people who choose to keep an incompatible citizenship.

Such a stripping of Finnish citizenship is against article 7 of the European Convention on Nationality and won’t happen.

Article 15 says that Article 7 doesn't apply when the retention of a nationality is subject to the renunciation of another nationality.

When section 33 a was added to the Nationality Act article 7 was evaluated to be a limiting factor in the government proposal.
