Thank you for the reminder that koko is indeclinable, as opposed to kaikki.

Fingerpori is my absolute favourite. But I didn´t understand today´s strip. Would anybody care to enlighten me?

(You can see today’s Fingerpori strip here.)EP wrote:Fingerpori is my absolute favourite. But I didn´t understand today´s strip. Would anybody care to enlighten me?
Maan ystävät – part of the international Friends of the Earth network – has been campaigning for the reduction of private cars in cities. One such campaign apparently involves riding a bicycle, instead of driving a car, and equipping it with a sticker saying “Yksi auto vähemmän.” In the strip, it seems, the sticker is being plastered onto a private jet, with only a single seat in the cockpit...

Yeah....koko v. kaikki....I've had some problems distinguishing these two words....
Koko, appears to carry the sense of the entirety of something that you might normally think of as indivisible... and kaikki, all of some collections of items.... the English usages of "all" and "whole" seem to be a little more "elastic".....
And to add to the fun...kaikki can also be viewed as either singular or plural... the nominaive forms are the same... depending, it seems, on whether the subject carries a singular sense or a plural sense....
I wonder how you would say this?:
"The whole world is watching."
Koko maailma katsoo.
Kaikki maailma katsoo.
Kaikki maailma katsovat...
or just
Kaikki katsovat...... ...or something all together different....

Kaikki maailma katsoo. No go, both maailma and katsoo should be in plural too to make that sound right.
Kaikki maailma katsovat... All world are watching... so Kaikki katsovat wants maailma to be plural too. And we are assuming that there are more worlds.
Kaikki katsovat. Ok

Re: Fingerpori double-takes pt II
I doubt this "opens" to people that easily...
mustis = mustasukkainen = "black socked" = jealous
mustis = mustanaamio = "black mask" = Phantom (appears on Fingerpori as do Superman and Spiderman occasionally)

Re: Fingerpori double-takes pt II
Huh? Sounds fine to my ears, though not that common. I think the kaikki + singular construct implies that maailma is a substance word, like "the mass of people watching".Upphew wrote:Kaikki maailma katsoo. No go, both maailma and katsoo should be in plural too to make that sound right.
This one OTOH breaks the subject-verb congruence of number - parse error results.Rob A. wrote:Kaikki maailma katsovat...

It sounds OK, if you live around GHA
Ketä katsoo? No kaikki maailma katsoo!
