I asked my sister about this, as she is a speech therapist and I have troubles rolling r on both sides of my tongue (it comes out a bit squewed) She suggested 2 things, one a physical tongue exercise and another a spoken one. first, practice rolling your tongue back and pressing against the centre o...

I'm a bit drunk right now, but I wanted to say thanks etc. to Phil for writing such a great guide. it is things like this and so forth that have really made an impact on my job hunt here in Finland. suffice to say that after 6 months of being here in jyväskylä -and this is not a boast, but a thank y...

Hi Phil, just noticed that on pronouns 1 practice, he/she marks me wrong when I input hän. It does not show the correct answer, only showing hän in red as incorrect

Still helping me loads - I like to do half an hour a day and am improving vastly, cheers

You shuold check out the other book I mentioned, "The optimists guide to Finland (for business people)". Like I said in my prev post, the business aspect is slightly tongue in cheek and the book is much funnier and, in some ways, practically informative than the Swallow book. Hope you can ...

We used, or should I say that the forwarding agent we went through in the UK used, Beweship for the finnish end of the move. They seemed very helpful even though the UK firm made a bit of a mess with co-ordinating with them (see my soon to come guide to moving to Finland). They gave us good assuranc...

I'm just hoping that I am not in the same boat in xyrs time. I know that it can be really hard and very daunting to try out your basic (toddler) finnish on strangers who, no doubt would rather you didn't in some ways, but I think you have to just through yourself in there. This is coming from someon...

as I have only been in finland for 3 weeks, I am quite interested in the whole, 'how long will it take debate'. I am fortunate enough to be quite good at languages through 2 gifts, a good ear and ability to replicate sounds and a good memory, especially for 'strange' or 'nice-in-the-mouth' words. I ...

I didn't discover . this way (as I joined before leaving the UK) but it was nice to see a . poster that someone had put up in the language centre here at Jyväskylän Yliopisto!!! back to the books now - why can't there be a pill that I can swallow that would make me wake up tomorrow speaking fluent S...

mmmm.... well guys, I thought that it was very informative and had some great practical information (though most of which I have read in many other places). However, I thought that the author had quite an irritating writing style (too much repition and cliched phrasing). Also, I thought that she/the...
