Re: Bringing up kids bilingual
Had a problem a few months back about my daughter taking English has a second language at school, ex wanted her to learn Swedish, I argued that it would boost her confidence at school being in a class where she had an advantage of prior knowledge, whereas her knowledge of Swedish is zilch. However I ...

Re: Bringing up kids bilingual
Haven't read all the posts fully, but we had a bit of a worry about my daughter with school work, was booked to see the special needs teacher, once she found out my daughter was bilingual, we were told that bilingual children often lag behind a little, but do catch up quite easily, which her ...

Re: Social Class
But what about younger Comrades? Did Bubba meet younger people in Prague?
Well...I was working with people between the ages of about 14 - 40. The odd one was 50 or abouts.
Well when people reach 50 they do get kind of odd. But it would seem that the younger generation are not impressed ...

Re: Social Class
Another example is the current PM ... the guy took 15 years to get his Master´s degree ... there´s taking the scenic route and then there´s taking the piss. The fact that his father was an influential professor of political science didn´t open any doors for him, did it? No siree.
I can't ...

Re: Social Class
After the collapse (shortly after and for 12 years), but, most of the people to whom I am referring would have been in their 40s and 50s at the time, so they would have grown up, been educated and received their degrees in the era of the Soviet Union/Iron Curtain, plus, even after the "collapse" of ...

Re: Social Class
The other thing which was mentioned, was that since the 70's and the ties with the ex-Soviet Union, the interest in socialism in Finland etc., titles became less important and were dropped. Actually I disagree with that entirely. I lived in central-europe for 12 years and travelled to the other ...

Re: Social Class
When I was young, older working class people use to dress up in suits to go out , the middle class use to dress down, I got kicked out at 17 because after an argument with my dad I did go out in a scruffy old leather jacket and dirty jeans on a Sunday, rebel without a bath or a suit.

Re: Social Class
I do wish people would stop going on about education and class, class is more than just being able to go to university. New Universities were built to educate the masses all over the world during the 60's and 70's, the reason is obvious we were entering a new technological age, countries were in ...

Re: Social Class
on earth has a class system is wrong, because of the reasons I outlined above i.e. matriarchal, patriarchal and societies governed by 'elders' are not class based.
Go on then, give me 1 example each of a decent sized matriarchy, patriarchy or elder governed society which didn´t have a class ...

Re: Social Class
The "test" I use is the old "What's In This For Me" test.....if I think there's something in it for me, then I'll go along with it, or at least "pay lip service" to it...if not then I just do my best to avoid it.... :D :D
I react differently in 'social occasions' when I can't avoid them, I tell ...

Re: Social Class
By that definition, every society on earth has a class system.
Thanks for agreeing. That is the point I was trying to get across. And that includes Finland. To claim there is no class system here is ludicrous.
Then I was wrong about your interpretation, however to say that every society on ...

Re: Social Class
By that definition, every society on earth has a class system. From the most minute tribe to superpowers, all of them have some hierarchy and the concept of parents providing for their children is universal.
