Buying a Smart TV from Amazon UK

Despite Gigantti's latest sale offers, it seems there is better value buying a TV from Amazon UK and having it shipped over to Finland. Other than a UK plug, is there anything else to be aware of when purchasing a TV from UK? Guess the default language for the TV is English (a plus for me). If it in...

Antenatal Classes in English

Hi,

Foreign noob dad-to-be here. Mum is Finnish and this is our first child. :D

Has anybody attended antenatal classes in English within the HKI region? Any recommendations or thoughts? These seem to be quite standard procedure in the UK (I understand).

Cheers.

I highly, highly recommend TransferWise. Fast, transparent and cheap. Originally setup by some of the original founders of Skype.

Re: Unemployment Benefits

Thanks again for the info everybody. I will submit my application to join the fund this weekend. Hopefully this thread will encourage those in employment who are not currently members of a fund to join too.

Re: Unemployment Benefits

Thanks for the info folks! Out of interest Pursuivant, where did you get 10 months from? My interpretation is that you have to be a member of the fund for 6 months before making a claim: http://www.tyj.fi/eng/earnings-related_allowance/conditions_for_claiming_allowance/conditions_regarding_membershi...

Unemployment Benefits

As job uncertainty continues in Finland, I am curious to understand what government benefits are available should one be laid off from their employer? Assuming that you have been working and paying taxes for over 2 years. Also, I have heard about unemployment insurance funds which, for an annual sub...

Re: Plumbing Work - Invoice Dispute

Thanks for your responses guys! I think a call to the Consumer Agency will be the next logical step to find out where exactly we stand legally. In the meantime, we will demand that the plumber comes to replace the tap for the product we actually ordered for no additional expense. @Alex.sm - foolishl...

Plumbing Work - Invoice Dispute

Hi, We had some minor plumbing work done as part of our kitchen rennovation and recently received the invoice. It is 'slightly' more than expected! I fear that as the plumber was a friend-of-a-friend, we were a bit careless regarding the initial agreement of the work to be carried out. Firstly, I wo...

1 in 8 Helsinki residents are non-Finnish speaking. This is forecast to increase to 1 in 5 by 2030. Many of whom are from outside the EU - in particular Russia. Not saying it's an easy ride to get here. But the stats show it is possible ? http://yle.fi/uutiset/helsinkis_foreign-speaking_population_s...

Thank you for the feedback everybody. Will take all of your points on board. We have a reliable builder (specializing in kitchen fittings) to do the dirty work so that should side-step any potential issues there at least!
