Id just ask your neuvola nurse which of the other staff speaks god English and ask to change to her.
If you are having your baby at Jorvi, Ive had both of mine there and never had a language problem.

Re: Being pregnant in Finland - experiences
Your neuvola nurse wont listen for the heartbeat until around 16 weeks. Its really hard to find it before that and it causes stress thats not needed. You make your appointments with your nurse at the end of an appointment so you can make it to suit yourself or then call and change it if its turns ou...

Re: Help, moving to Finland to have a baby!
Well, I do not know how common family rooms are actually. Our kids, last one being born about a month ago, had mommy go to common maternity ward and that's it. I had to go back to sleep at home. They are kept for first time parents, we tried for one last time because of any potential language issue...

As far as Im aware the only reason to take a DNA test is if the father disputes paternity - clearly not the case here!

Re: Help, moving to Finland to have a baby!
Maternity units generally have "family" rooms here so the father can stay in hospital. I had my children at Jorvi hospital in Espoo. I had my second 10 months ago and policy then was to save the family rooms for first time parents but of course no guarentee there will be one free for you. ...

Re: Help, moving to Finland to have a baby!
Im British with a Finnish husband and have had 2 children here. For your own comfort and ease it may be better for you to have your baby back in the UK and then move. Im mainly thinking along the lines of language barriers and just "knowing" how things work. I assume you are still first tr...

Re: Being pregnant in Finland - experiences
Do you mind if I ask how old you are and how long you've been trying? Its really normal to take upto a year to become pregnant, thats with both of you being in full working order and no problems. I really dont know if they even offer that sort of scan here, at least in the UK its more common to run ...

Re: Giving Birth
There is little point taking breast pads, add a couple if you wish but dont bother with the whole box. It takes several days for your milk to come in.

Re: Giving Birth
You actually need very little of your own. Make-up, toiletries and going home clothes you do need to take for yourself and of course going home clothes for baby. Any snacks or drinks nearer the time, some magazines can be handy and of course your camera. Ive had 2 babies here and the hospital pretty...

Re: Joensuu Maternity Care
Do I assume correctly that you are not moving from elsewhere in Finland? Homebirths here are not very popular, I know they do happen in small numbers though. Ive asked someone about a group so Ill get back to you. I lived in Joensuu a long time ago but Ive had my children elsewhere. The general heal...
