Re: Transfer money to a foreign account

Online currency services like the ones mentioned above allow you to fill in a purpose. If you're sending to a country that has strong exchange controls, the receiving bank may contact the receiving account holder for more information before it gets released. But that depends on the country.

Re: Children commute in winter

Okay thanks! And when do schools remain closed for long vacations (winter break or after session break)? Are daycares also closed during those days/months? It may vary by region and by school, but most get 2 weeks around Christmas and New Year, and 2 months (generally all of July and August) in sum...

Re: Transfer money to a foreign account

I've used Transferwise with good results - very low fees. They don't do every country & currency - I've also used Currencies Direct - and there are a number of other services like that.

Re: EU residence permit for third-country national

Norway is outside the EU (as illustrated :) ) so that provision doesn't help. And I don't see any mention of special provisions for Norway although you might expect it, since it's part of the Schengen area (though free movement does not mean free residence) and part of the Nordic area. You would nee...

Re: Need help with broken car

One possibility, unless the battery is very new, is that it's not holding a charge. Has it been reliable through the winter? Have you had many cold starts without the engine being preheated? - That could put wear on the battery.

You might need to replace the battery.

Re: where to pick berries

Was in Nuuksio last week, circular walk from Haukkalampi. There are bilberries everywhere. Could easily have picked a kilo without leaving the path. Bring a big bucket! Or just stuff your face like we did. Actually the bilberries are past their best - the strawberries are still growing but there wer...

Re: Finnish or Swedish?

My understanding is there are very few places where being able to speak Finnish would be less useful than being able to speak Swedish - possibly only Åland. In fact, also some municipalities in Ostrobothnia - see List of municipalities of Finland in which Finnish is not the sole official language - ...
