Re: insurance company in English
We always did that. Use Google Translator to give a good start, then my wife can read and write enough to complete the job. Believe it or not, they demanded a phone call to test our spoken language proficiency... Written only was not enough. No need to say I wrote straight away to Ombudsman and if ...

Re: Finnish citizen but I don't speak Finnish
íslensk :) Yeah, I agree that if you are planning on living a Finnish speaking life in Finland, you need to get your Finnish levels up! Just put out the Swedish speaking things because the people in this forum tend to forget that Finland also contains Swedish speaking parts and people, and if life i...

Re: Finnish citizen but I don't speak Finnish
Hæ! Finnish is going to be less critical if you move to Swedish speaking parts of the country (eg. area around Vasa) or even to the Åland islands (Swedish-only region). There would certainly be jobs there for a Swedish speaker, not sure how exciting they would be though. Or how easily you would find...

Yeah... it's not like Swedish works either. Or anything out of the norm, even in Finnish.zetorpilot wrote: Why should you expect the "ytk grannies" to speak English in a country where the languages are Finnish and Swedish?

What you are experiencing is the difference between the written language and the spoken one. It can be quite huge.
I would suggest that you watch TV, and listen to radio. Just to train your ears & brain in hearing puhekieli.

Re: If you only have a "residency" can you get social assist
Also, there are two types of assistance one can get, the residence-based ones and the "you have contributed to the system"-ones. You won't get unemployment money or stuff like that, assistance that is based on first having paid taxes/making payments. As a resident (except student) you are ...
