Puoliherrasmies

Hi,
I would really appreciate your help with this word: puoliherras. Does it mean literally half-gentleman? What kind of image do Finnish natives have in mind when hearing this word?

Thank you!

Re: Hörsyileviä

Hello, I am trying to get a hang of the word „hörsyileviä”. At first I thought it may come from the verb hörsyillä, which I seem to find nowhere, sadly. Also, if I look for hörsyileviä only, I get several examples and while trying to grasp the meaning from the context, I am guessing that it may mea...

Re: Kyllä vai joo?

I can also confirm that it can be often used more as a form of emphasis.

Kyllä, niin on.
Kyllä, tietysti voisin.., jne

Other than that, I don't think there is a clear difference between kyllä and joo - rather than the fact that one is more colloquial than the other. :)

Pakosti selviäisi pian

Hello,

I have encountered a confusing phrase: mies, jonka olemassaolo siis pakosti selviäisi pian.

What I don't understand is what kind of function does pakosti have in here? Is it some kind of täytyy?
Also, does selviäisi come from selviätä, meaning to survive?

Thank you in advice for any help!

Meaning of ”tekee kuolemaa”

Hello,

Jos joku ”tekee kuolemaa”, tarkoisiko et ihminen on ”dying”? Vaan se on jo kuollut?

I am translating a text right now and from the Finnish articles, my hunch is that someone is dying, not dead yet. But I really need the exact nuance on this one.

Thank you a lot!

Kalossintapaiset and huopatohvelit

Hello everyone! I am currently translating a book from Finnish to my native language. I was wondering if anyone here could help me out with *kalossintapaiset*. :( I can't seem to find an exact translation anywhere. I am thinking of a logical approach, kaloss can mean gum and then tapaiset can derriv...
