However Helsinki is too small a city to have one. There as London and Manchester in the UK have inner city regions.
The now officially defunct Kantakaupunki area (http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helsingin_kantakaupunki ) is still quite commonly referred to in spoken language.

Ive also found that Lidl is pretty cheap but they don't have everything.
For others I go to the Prisma in Malmi.
We have a K-market in front of my house but that one is for sure more expensive how ever it does have some products that they dont have at Prisma or Lidl (import products that I really like  ).
And I come by Malmi after works so I usually stop there for shoppings :)

Lid is for sure our target when buying just normal food and household stuff.
Ofcourse more often they are missing some key products and naturally certain things are never sold there...Image
Still worth to visit many times a week, and once a week an other shop, to collect the more rare ingredients.

Usually just shop in Kmarket or Lidl. Lidl is good for meat (they have very good mince beef in my local Lidl at the moment for 3.29 euros). KMarket is good for things like hot sauce (like Blair's Ultra Death sauce for less than 10 euros) and food with nutritional value. I never shop in S-Market (pronounced Ass-Market for you non-residents).

Did this website go away? Either my computer is dumb, or the link is broken or the website disappeared. I think maybe my computer is dumb...

Anybody else having trouble accessing http://www.kauppakori.fi?

O K it's not a supermarket but if you want good quality, reasonably priced meat, you need to go to Veijo Wotkins abbatoir in Soirnainen, it's essentially a meat product cash and carry but they have an outlet shop, sorry, I've probably spelt Soirnainen incorrectly don't crucify me for it

TOTAL newbie question, but can someone explain the whole 'S-Market' 'K-market' deal to me? What do the letters mean? Are they all the same chain of grocery stores? Competitors?

Well, its basically the area south of the toll gates that was the "city" back in the day. If its covered by the tram network you can claim living in Helsinki, oherwise its the suburbs (that used to be villages until the 1950's)
