Finnish crime novels translated to English

Post by tintu_mon » Fri May 24, 2013 9:50 am

Hi,

I have read a few of the Harjunpää novels by Matti Joensuu (To steal her love and The Priest of Evil) and they were really interesting. I would like to read more Finnish crime novels (translated to English), something similar to Jo Nesbo and Wallander novels. Any suggestions?

And btw, I am halfway through Purge by Sofi Oksanen. It's awesome.

Thanks,
TM

Gollanz used to publish one of the early Harjunpää novels back in the day.... Harjunpää and the Stone Murders I think.

Yeah, it's there on Amazon. But seems to be published back in '87. I am more into Kindle and would prefer if the books are comparatively new (2000's) and available in e-book format. Thanks anyway.

And btw, also watched the movie The Priest of Evil. Very much different from the book, but Peter Franzen's performance was commendable.

You get better luck with movies, say Vares series is more or less translated, as are the 90's 2000's crime movies starting with "Bad luck love" or "Paha maa" and of course "Raid" with unforgettable characters like Inspector Jansson and Archie the Arse. Of course then theres this new jerrycotton pulp writer James Thompson that has Inspector Vaara series... a bit sad Ilkka Remes doesn't get much translated, hes done similar innovative alternate reality and some good books. Now if you want to go a bit west, Jan Guillou has written a lot of Swedens own jamesbond Commander Hamilton

Kiitos. Will check out the movies. There seems to be some good torrents with seeds in Pirate Bay. Downloading straight away.

Last week, I watched 'Body of Water'. Is it based on a book?

A couple more of these, plus some new books, like Anja Snellman's Pet Shop Girls, are now available as Kindle books. Ice Cold Crime in the US specializes in translating and publishing Finnish crime novels. You can find them if you search for the publisher on Amazon : http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss? ... d+crime%22

Hi!
The link above is outdated. Here's the new site.
http://scandicrimeproject.wordpress.com/finland/

A couple of Leena Lehtolainen's books have by now been translated to English.
There was an error in my previous post, the author of "Wolves and Angels" is Seppo Jokinen.
- His main character's name is Sakari Koskinen.
