E509

E509 is Calcium Chloride.

It is extremely useful in making Crispy Pickles - instead of Ca(OH)2 - lime.

It's used in a ton of products in Finland:

But where to get it for the home kitchen. I've looked in Pharmacy systems but haven't found it - but even if it was available, pharmacy prices are at such a price, you'd end up with cucumber slices that cost you 1€ each to make.

Any ideas?

Calcium Chloride is actually very cheap. I used to get it 1Kg for 20 euros. For the 1L jars, you barely need 2g of it to make the pickles decently crispy without affecting the taste. But later I got it even cheaper from eBay for about 10 euros per Kg. That would be about 2 cents per each jar.

Do you have a link for the eBay supplier please? (Delivery costs? - 1 kg usually pretty expensive almost everywhere these days).

CaCl2 SHOULD be cheap (but don't tell everone that :) ) - it's the stuff they pour by the 1000's of tons on the winter streets. Of course, that's not food grade - but still.

Try asking K-rauta?
That won't be food grade - Agrimarket sells a 100 kg sack for 10€ or something. It's the stuff you spread on your snowy-icy driveway.

Just took a quick look at eBay - 1 kg stuff was 5£ - but post was 10£. Seems you (adnan) found a different supplier - link please?

I really don't remember. Last time I got some, it was probably early 2014. I still haven't used all it. Maybe I was wrong about the 1kg and it could have been 500g.
