Where to buy good Italian cheese in Finland?
Where to buy good Italian cheese in Finland?
I am looking for a gourmet store in Finland that sells high-quality Italian cheeses (like 36+ months old Parmigiano Reggiano)? The parmigiano that big supermarkets (like S-market, K-market and Prisma) normally carry is usually much younger (12-24 months old). Is there a specific gourmet store where I could buy an "older" parmigiano other than Stockmann in Helsinki?

The K-Supermarket in Mankaa, Espoo, is specialised in cheese, it is known for that throughout the whole bigger Helsinki area. You can find real rareties there, as well as whole cheese-wheels to buy, but of course I cannot guarantee that you will find exactly what you are looking for.GREAKLY wrote:I am looking for a gourmet store in Finland that sells high-quality Italian cheeses (like 36+ months old Parmigiano Reggiano)? Thank you very much for the information. Do all K-supermarkets (they are the same thing as K-markets, right) specialize in cheese or just the one in Mankaa? Are there any other ones that might have similar selection? I am based in Kotka-Hamina area. Do you think there could be something similar in my location? If not, I'll be driving from Hamina to Tampere via Helsinki (Keha 3) next week. Do you know if there is a "cheese" store anywhere along that route? As much as I would love to visit the one in Mankaa, it's a bit off the way. Especially since I'll be driving during the rush hour with eight months old baby.

Any chance the store in Mankaa ships their cheeses to the addresses in Finland?

No, just the one in Mankaa. I don't know the full history, but it has been specialised in cheeses for a long while, seems the owner wanted it to attract rich customers so close to Kauniainen.GREAKLY wrote:Thank you very much for the information. Not sure you have something similar close to you, I would try asking Finns in the area, they often know that. And I don't think a K-Supermarket would ship cheese. But I guess you could call and ask if they even have what you want.
Otherwise, if money is no problem, why not have some shipped to you from abroad?
Re: Where to buy good Italian cheese in Finland?
That's exactly what I was trying to avoid. The problem is that shipping from Italy to Finland is about 20-22 euros (with a 70 euro minimum per order):wolf80 wrote:Otherwise, if money is no problem, why not have some shipped to you from abroad?

Which is a bit too much for piece of cheese. Alternatively, I could spend 150+ and have 8 euro shipping:

Or spend 200+ euros and have free shipping:

Basically, I'd either have to pay 35-40 euros (including delivery charges) for a small piece of parmigiano or buy a lot of cheese (like a few kilos which will last me a few years) to qualify for cheap shipping. Either option is not so attractive. That's why I am looking for a store in Finland where I could just buy a small piece (or a few) for a sensible price.

If you know someone who has a card for Heino, check out the cheeses at Heino next time in PK area.. They are supplying many restaurants so their range is formidable. And the prices often quite something else than K.
