Playschool availability

Post by Tristan123 » Fri Jul 09, 2021 9:17 am

[hello,

We are moving from Ireland to Rovaniemi around January.

My son will be 5 and we have been looking at playschools for him. So far all the ones we contacted said they were full.
Is this something common and is there a way around this?
We haven't checked schools yet, is it a similar case?

Thanks

Are you looking for daycare in Finnish or English? All English language daycare in Rovaniemi seems to be private, which means you can’t really do much except look until you find one which has room. Usually it’s easiest to get a place in August, when the older kids leave for preschool or school. However, if Finnish language daycare is ok, you can contact the munucipality. They have to find a place in daycare för children living in Rovaniemi inside four months of the application. Now in July they’re probably closed for the summer holidays, but contacting them later might be a good idea anyway.

I’m assuming your son was born in 2016? That means he will start pre-school in August 2022 and school in August 2023, so those options are not yet available to him.

It’s two weeks when moving from outside the municipality due to work or studies though it’s required to apply as soon as possible.

Are you sure that this exception applies to op and their family? It does say ”eikä tarpeen alkamisajankohta ole ennakoitavissa”.

I am not. They will have to decide themselves.
