Baby on the way with no KELA coverage

Post by clarissa » Wed Nov 21, 2012 12:46 am

Hi everybody,

I want to ask if anyone knows about this particular issue because I have been looking in internet but all the information I have found so far alks about Kela covered families only.
First I will tell a bit about my current situation. Me and my husband moved to Finland more than 2 years ago because he had a 2 year contract as a sportsman. We both received a B type residence permit (temporal one) and he got a Kela card, but I didn't.
This summer his contract ended but he got a new one for only one more year and we have to renovate our residence permit by the beginnig of next year, but by that time, his contract will be valid for only 6 more months, so I am not really sure for how long we can make the application for the new permit or what kind of permit can we actually receive (if the same B one or an A type).
The thing now is that I am a few weeks pregnant and I am not really sure what my baby's situation will be once he is born. Will he be covered by Kela even when I am not? Since my husband is covered by Kela, would he receive any parenting benefits or he is not entitled to? I have done quite fine the last 2 years without any social security coverage or benefit, but now the baby comes I have been wondering what the situation will be.

Thanks a lot for your answers in case someone knows something or have had a similar experience.

Somebody here seemed to know that the answer would be "yes": viewtopic.php?f=3&t=64262#p465208
(I did not/would not dare to say)

Since my husband is covered by Kela, would he receive any parenting benefits or he is not entitled to?
He would be entitled to them, but apart from "lapsilisä" (and you could check the income limits for "housing benefit/asumistuki" for a family of three) they are paid to the parent who is not working because (s)he is taking care of the child.

Thanks for your answer.
I checked the topic you suggested but the situacion seems to be different. Our permits are B (temporary ones) and that's why I was not entitled to KELA. My husband did received it because he is the one working. I don't know if the type of residence permit affects the type of benefits one can receive from KELA. Anyway, yesturday we applied for the extension to the residence permit and apparently it will take about a month. After knowing what type of permit we are receiving (hopefully A) I guess it will be easier to ask for advice on what to do.
