Post by UYI » Thu Nov 07, 2019 7:46 pm

I'm trying to find information on my grandfathers John Sandstrom born Jul 3rd 1871 in Jeppo (immigrated to US in 1889), his father Matt Sandstrom born C:1840 in Jeppo & my grandmother (John's wife) Maria Sophia Freidlund born Feb 6 1861 in Munsala, immigrated to US in 1892

Do these records still exist at all?

Fire, water, rodents, insects or mold can destroy paper.
150 years is long enough that acid decay might have destructed the paper.

For everyone except your grandmother you only have the anglicized names, not the original Swedish names.
I assume the original Russian passports of your grandparents no longer exist?

Sandström is a common Swedish name.
It is possible that you have distant relatives still living in the area where your grandparents were born, but for most people this is between 4 and 6 generations ago and everyone might have moved elsewhere.

Am I correct that one of Joel Matt/Signa/Edith/Annie Elvera/Ester/Louis Amanda is your parent and that your grandparents (married around 1896) moved around 1900 from Michigan to Florence, Wisconsin where your grandfather died 1911?
1910 census says your grandmother immigrated to the US in 1893, but the 1920 census says she already immigrated in 1892 and became a US citizen in 1894.
Exact names stated for your grandmother and her children are varying between the censuses from 1905 to 1940.

According to the church in Florence your grandfather was born Jul 3 1870 (not 1871), and the patronymic name of your grandmother was Jakobson.
The cemetery information also says 1870, and death years for your grandparents are 1911 and 1945.

I have found some more information. And to be clear, these are my mothers great grandparents. Here is information i found...
Maria Sofia went by multiple names..Maria Sofia Jakobsdotter in Finland. Went by Maria Ryss on her passport. Went by Maria Sofia Freidlund in Wisconsin, USA. Then Maria Sophia Sandstrom when she married Johan Sandstrom. But she used nearly every combination thru her life.

Johan Mattson Sandstrom also had multiple names. Johann Mattson in Finland, Johan Mattson Jungara on his passport, and Johan Mattson when he arrived in the US. I cannot find out when he changed his name to Sandstrom, but it appears all the Sandstrom brothers changed there names to Sandstrom after being married, so I assume Johan did the same thing.

Given her age when migrating to the US, Ryss could be the name of her first husband.
I wonder whether the microfiche from her marriage record might contain additional information, like whether she was a widow.

She might be the Maria S. Ryss who arrived 3 Oct 1892 in Ellis Island.

She also used various birth years throughout her life, the 1900 census says "Feb 1864" and after that her birthyear slowly moved to 1861.
Is there a birthyear in her passport?

Based on the census records she had at least 6 children.
Her 1861 claim is hard to believe - first child at age 35 and last child at age 47.
Even a 1864 birthyear would put her children between her age 32 and 44.

Was there something in her past she was trying to hide, or were there just benefits from changing age?

Finland Girl, we have often wondered the same thing (married previously) but, my great Aunts & uncles, her children knew nothing about her being previously married or having other children. She was older than her husband by 9 years, and her firsat child with him was at 35 when she had her son Matthew Joel Sandstrom, and she was 46 when she had her last child Amanda Lovisa Sandstrom.

One interesting thing is that Johan Mattson & Sofia Maria are in the Munsala comuniun book as being married in Munsala. But it had also been crossed out. Not sure what it means but the dates were off. Johan had already left by 1889, but Munsala Marriage Records, 1850-1911 show Johannes Mattsson Jungarå and Maria Sofia Jakobsdotter Ryss, married 7.3.1896...but the entry appears to be crossed out...not sure what that means...

Little off topic, but is the first name Beata short for something?? Elizabeth maybe?

Did they know anything about her early years?

Her death certificate says the name of her father was "John Freeland", which could be an English speaker trying to spell a name like "Johan Frilund " from hearing.
Her death certificate says the name of her mother was "Freeland", note that no first name was known.
Her death was reported by her daughter, with whom she had lived together for nearly 40 years.

From the dates she has claimed during her life I would consider 1864 more likely then 1861.

Ryss was a farm in Munsala and Jungarå was a farm in Jeppo.

The death of Johan Mattss. Sandström in the US was registered in Munsala with farm Ryss.

One guess how the different names would make sense:

Maria Sofia, daughter of Jakob Fridlund, worked as servant on farm Ryss
Johan Sandström, son of Matts Sandström, grew up on farm Jungarå
