I think I made 350 or 400 cash in hand, got free room & board as well as slops, but I was a junior purser so I had my officer's bars. Some of the stewards made 2-3x as much as me though. The pay wasn't anything extraordinary, but comparing what I had gotten in Finland in 1994, it was more. Here in 1997-98 though the Viking Line pay was crap, taxation hideous and the cash left was totally useless (though I did extra in the commercial department but still). So yes, I'd go back any time if I was landed unemployed with the same outlook as then. Though now with a degree I could probably work my way as the systems guy and they have three bars to start with and the money is better.
