Aussie wanting to live in Finland

Post by leo » Thu Apr 29, 2004 4:13 am

Hi all,

I'm very keen to live and work in Finland for a year or so. My grandparents immigrated from Finland to Oz in the 1950's and have always wanted to live there for a year or so.

I work in the Health/ Health Research area. I have a completed a Bachelor of Applied health Scienece and Masters in Applied Epidemiology.

I have been to Finland twice before, have a basic understanding of the language (improves so quickly after being there) and have a large extended family there.

Does anyone have any suggestions about getting a job there? Considering my family links would i be considered for a different type of Visa?

All help is appreciated. :D

Well, there is a site in Oz with the Finns at http://www.dundernews.com I think theres some Q&A.
Now if you're under 30 you can easily come over to feel around with a 'working visitor' visa. If your grandparents were born in Finland then you maybe can claim Finnish citizenship (check http://www.uvi.fi ), but then again if you're a bloke under 30, off to the military you go (or try to squirm out of it). There is a lot of need for medical personnel, but as you have a 3rd country (mind the pun) qualifications, you need to apply for qualifications here and spend some time in class to learn the 'Finnish way' (search in here, we just had a discussion over this for doctors) - that is definitely if you want a tenure in the university/public hospital sector. Companies might not be quite as fussy.
Cheers, Hank W.
