2. Would he be allowed to work in Finland
No.
Not correct. He can but the positions are limited.

In practice it is correct that he would not be allowed to work, these exceptions are not relevant in practice.

It’s not out of the question to find a position in a non-profit. However, one should make plans assuming it doesn’t happen.

Hello,
My girlfriend that lives in the United States would like to move to Finland to live with me, would she be able to get in with the intimate relationship RP, I am a Finnish citizen.
We have been dating for 7 months now but it has only been long distance since covid has been restricting travels..
I work full time, i have means of living and an apartment where she would be living with me. She has over 14k€ in savings and has an active job that allows her to work from anywhere in the world remotely. So she has active income around 60k€ per year. She has also been learning Finnish for the past 6 months since she wants to move here eventually.

Thanks for the answers in advance!

Hi, I tried to research on the Web but can't find details.

For the intimate relationship, do you have to have lived together 2 years or date 1-2 years works? (in person) (the website says you have to proof dating and possible living together....is dating in person enough?)
Let's say a Canadian has been dating a Finn in Canada because the Finn has a work visa there and maybe they would move to Finland eventually.
I have a degree and specialized job. (I also have plenty of money to live without work for a year or more)

Or if you have experience with more than one visa, is it easier to get a visa as a Freelancer in Finland? (if your canadian employer is OK with you moving)

Also, for the 1000$/month, for how many months?

Is the intimate relationship visa renewable? or just 1 year?

Thank you everyone!

Living together for 2 years qualifies for the spouse residence permit.
There are no fixed criteria what is required for a residence permit on other grounds for an intimate relationship.

You won't be granted a residence permit if it is not based on any reason that requires you to be in Finland (like study place, girlfriend/wife or job in Finland).

Residence in Finland makes you liable to pay taxes in Finland on income/inheritance/gifts/... received worldwide, and social security payments also have to be sorted out for remote work.
Except for irrelevant exceptions, the intimate relationship residence permit does not grant you the right to work.

€ not $

For the entire period of validity of your residence permit.

One of the exceptions is "in a specialist position requiring special skills"; does this not include anything requiring a degree, as I understood the normal specialist permit does?

Same rules apply as for the specialist permit. Though if one gets a specialiat position, it would make sense to immediately look into applying for a specialist residence permit.

A specialist residence permit won't be granted for a job that is not in Finland, that's why Migri requires a commission agreement with a Finnish client when the employer does not have an office in Finland.

Working as a specialist for an employer abroad with a residence permit on other grounds is an interesting idea, I would ask Migri whether this is actually legal.

In any case the limited right to work won't exist while waiting for the residence permit decision, which is not a problem unless you are living in Finland during that time.

In case of remote employment I would in any case also recommend getting expert advice on taxation based on the double-taxation treaty between Finland and Canada, and how social security (especially mandatory pension payments) works in such situations.

Basically for employment (in contrast to entrepreneurship) there needs to be an entity registered in Finland involved. However, if the foreign company really wants to, it could get registered though often an easier route is just to use an employer of record.

Specialists can work for 90 days without a residence permit.

This would require some contracts between the Canadian company and the Finnish employer of record.

In practice remote work is possible for any employment outside Finland during the 90 days visa free stay, and after the visa free stay the specialist right to work also lapses.
