Minimum duration of a first residence permit

Post by luisv » Sat Jul 20, 2019 4:47 pm

Hi everyone,

I am planning to apply for a first residence permit as a self-employed person ("toiminimi"). I am a software developer working as an independent contractor for a US-based client.

My main concern is that my passport expires by mid-2020 and, as a Venezuelan citizen, extending the validity of my document or renewing my passport, is nearly an impossible task at this moment.

I have a couple of questions that I hope you can help me with:

1. Do you know if it is possible to apply for a shorter-than-one-year residence permit, say 8 months?
2. Do passports need to be valid for some period of time after a temporary residence permit expires? If so, what would be the length of this period?

Any thoughts or suggestions are warmly welcomed.

Thank you,

Luis

Throw your passport away and claim asylum (temporary protection) because Venezuela has gone to s#hit.

Residence permit is not linked with your passport. Generally, first permit is for 1 years or less depends of your grounds. However, you need to always have a valid passport or is an offence. If you cannot renew the passport, you can get an aliens passport from Migri.

Usually for software experts is 2 years for the first residence permit. At least that is my case and also some colleges. But if you are applying for "self-employed" then the permit could be different.

I didn't know about aliens' passports. Thanks! That is helpful. I guess I could travel within the Schengen Area with an alien's passport (?). My family lives here in Europe and I would like to pay them a visit every now and then, saving time and money to cover distances.

That makes sense. Foreign talents hired for full-time positions in Finnish companies may get longer permits. I will look into it a bit further. Thanks for sharing this. In any case, I may apply for an extended permit if everything goes smoothly and by then, I have a valid document.

It is a very popular figure among people from my country, although I prefer to opt for the residence permit based on self-employment.

Residence permit is not valid travel document. Passport is. https://migri.fi/en/travel-documents

Visa is for visiting, Residence Permit for residing.

Indeed! By valid document, I meant an alien's passport or my own passport if I am lucky enough to get an extension from my country's regime.

Do you know if I could travel within the Schengen Area with an alien's passport?

Thank you,

Luis

Yes. It's in PRADO.
