Where to get a prescription for ritalin?

Post by Lula » Tue Dec 15, 2020 6:42 pm

Which doctor should I go to to get a prescription for ritalin or something similar? I strongly suspect that I have some kind of ADHD, it effects my preformance at work and I want to take care of it asap before I loose my job... I know I have to get diagnosed first, how and where can I do it quickly? I am 32 years old, live at Helsinki area.

Thanks :)

I can't advise on where to go (except to check if your employer has an occupational health function), but when you book an appointment and even more when you see the doctor, don't ask for "a prescription for ritalin" - by all means say you think you have ADHD and you think medication might help, but list the actual problems you're facing and let them prescribe the best course of action. It makes them feel more useful  plus there might be better options.

Thanks, now when I see it it looks like I'm just fishing for drugs
Am I obligated to tell my employer about things like that? If not, is it a good idea to do so or is it better to keep it to myself? I mean, is there a stygma about things like ADHD? I think that this is why I'm not doing so good at work, should I share this theory with my boss, or will it sound like I'm making excuses or something?

Your medical issues are your private matters only, go to see the doctor and get your diagnosis and medication.
ONLY if you absolutely feel you need to explain, you could do it but I am not sure if there is such a need, ever. You could also say later on, if necessary, you had some personal issues but now you are fine.
Not sure if ADHD is stigmatizing though, for long it was not diagnosed with the adults but currently it is more identified.

So, actually, I just finished the whole process. It's a ton of hoops to jump through to get an ADHD diagnosis and prescribed a treatment (in part because there is a somewhat serious meth problem in Finland). I'm in my mid-30s and have been fairly sure for a long time that I have ADHD (basically ever since I read about what the actual symptoms are and how they play out, probably 8 or 10 years ago), but was never in a position to get diagnosed until now. I have private insurance through my employer, so I was able to make an appointment with a psychiatrist.

I had to meet with a general psychiatrist a couple of times. He mentioned that I could either go to some specialist institute place, which he claimed would be faster (I can't remember the name), but he had to give a referral. OR there was an ADHD specialist that would come to the private doctor's sometimes, but he said that would take longer (as the specialist makes his own schedule). Before doing either, though, I had to do a few different things:

I had to get a drug test (which was a giant pain in the ass, as the national clinic will only give drug tests as part of getting a DUI or if you want to enter a drug rehabilitation program, and the private place wanted to charge 250 euros for it - fortunately I was able to talk to HR and get my work insurance to cover it).

I had to try to get my hands on any childhood medical or school records which might be able to corroborate ADHD behavior as a kid. (I wasn't able to get any, as all potential things have been lost or destroyed since I was a kid)

I had to take the DIVA 2.0 test (In conjunction with my parents, as you need to be able to talk with them about your behavior as a child to demonstrate you had symptoms then).

I ended up not going to the institute place (though, the psychiatrist had said that once doing the stuff, if I went there, it would be for a few meetings and would probably have to take the DIVA 5.0 test with them), but trying to get an appointment with the specialist (which actually wasn't too bad - just had to wait a couple of weeks). I had a couple of sessions with the specialist, who was really great, and ended up getting my diagnosis and a prescription for the Finnish version of ritalin (which, I'm taking slowly; if you have ADHD, you probably don't have to worry about what Y77 is talking about, as it works on the nervous system, and while neurotypical people might be able to use it to party, ADHD and other neurodivergent people generally just get more focused and wouldn't really want to party).

The whole process took about 9 months, start to finish. Probably could have done it faster if I hadn't run around for so long trying to find a way to get the drug test that wasn't expensive (and just asked HR from the beginning), if it hadn't taken so long to try to (unsuccessfully) track down old medical records, and if I hadn't gotten side tracked by work and such - but I'd guess it would probably still take a solid 2 or 3 months at a minimum.
