Got a PhD offered in Finland, but no Embassy in my Country.

Dear all: I'd like a piece of advice according this. I've got a PhD offered in Finland as a fixed contract basis, but in El Salvador (my home country) there's no Finland embassy. The closer embassy is in Mexico and I need a visa to go there. Since I'm not available to afford this extra funds without unbalance the funds required for a Residence Permit, which via may I use?

I can stay in Belgium for 3 months on my way to Finland, since my relatives lives there...can I apply in Belgium for a Residence Permit in Finland? can my wife and kid use the same route? or can I switch tourist visas to RP for me, my wife & kid once landed in Finland each of use at its appropriate time?

Any comment or suggestion would be very welcome!
