Evening studies at university while working

Post by nikitushu » Mon Sep 10, 2018 7:40 pm

Hi,

I am trying to understand if it is possible to take evening studies at university while I am working.
And if I can avoid any tuition fees.

I am waiting for my working residence permit having a full-time job. I finished IB program this year but I could not afford getting high education since it stopped being free, and that is why I chose my temporary path of a cleaner :) .

All the university websites state that if you possess residence permit type-A then you are eligible to study for free.
Do you think it would be possible to enroll into some evening studies, which would be free of charge, at university?

I am hesitating because theoretically working permit serves for working but at the same type it is type-A, which must allow me to study for free.

Thank you :)

Evening studies at the universities are usually organised by Open university, and all participants pay a fee. The fee varies from university to university, but it can be from something like 50 euro to hundreds. However, there’s also something calles MOOCS, which are free, but the available courses are not many.

Try these, or check the website of your local university:
https://www.helsinki.fi/en/open-university
https://mooc.fi/en/

You won’t have official student status and you won’t qualify for any student discounts or stuff.

Thanks for your reply :)

To clarify last thing, do you think it would be possible to study at university of applied sciences for free and work full-time at nights? In this case I have working permit type-A and I have enough free daily time to be present on university courses.

Besides not having enough time to study, you also run the risk of having your residence permit reclassified if Migri thinks you are primarily a student.

It is possible to study after work. Doing so in English though... and first one I looked up at metropolia.fi (tradenomi) has classes 17-20.15 mon-thu and some Saturdays.

Visa is for visiting, Residence Permit for residing.
