Register on migri service: 25.10.2020
Visit to migri : 04.11.2020
Decision made: 05.02.2021

Guys I got my decision in about 3 months and I just want to mention couple of things.

1- Your queue number means almost nothing (at least in my case meant nothing :D ), so don't count much on it. On 05.02.2021 that I got my decision my queue number was about 3000.
2- Your application might change status in just one day. I was checking my status and queue number every day twice a day for the past two weeks. I even checked my status on the morning of 05.02.2021. The status did not change at all. On 05.02.2021, it jumped from "waiting for progress" to "decision ready" at about noon. I got a text message and email that my decision is ready. A week before on Friday 29.01.2021 I got an automatic email that my documents are in queue to be checked and they will inform me if they need more info.

My background
I moved to Finland about 10 years ago, I studied here and had type B for about 5-6 years. Then I started working with permanent contract and got type A for the past 3-4 years.
Congrats Magic! Which service point did you use?
Tnx. Helsinki.

I would like to assume if your residence permit has less than one year of validity at the time you apply for citizenship, you will not get a decision on your citizenship application before you have extended your residence permit. In other words, people whose residence permits are expiring within the next one year need to wait longer to become Finnish citizens.
Wrong, that's not a valid assumption. My residency permit was expiring on August 2021.
I applied on 11.2020 and got my decision on 02.2021.

Does anyone else also experience trouble logging into EnterFinland?
I tried several time logging in with my banking credentials and it didn't work as of today. Already tried using a different browser, using it to login to other services like kela etc and it worked but not with enterfinland :(

Works fine for me - login by mobile certificate.

That sounds great! Let's hope new processing time will practically be implemented and affecting our cases.

Hi guys,

Does anyone have any idea why for people who received first residence permit being already in Finland it takes much longer (17-19 months acc.to calculator) to receive a decision than for those who has arrived already with it (5-7 months)? Taking both applied via enter Finland and have a valid passport.

It is just an incorrect text in the calculator (even if it is in each language).
That question is totally wrong, and the real meaning is different.

"Did you arrive in Finland without getting a residence permit in advance? "
"Oletko tullut maahan ilman etukäteen hankittua oleskelulupaa?"

For example EC citizens and members of their family can not get a residence permit/oleskelulupa anyhow.
Also it is absolutely legal for Specialists to get residence permits already in Finland.
Same for residents' spouses - they can legally arrive and apply for residence permit here.

Might be the real question is "are you a refugee" or something like that...

What is the average processing time most people are getting?

Mine should be a pretty open-shut case.
Originally Australian citizen.
I have lived here for 11 years now but not bothered to get citizenship.
Have the language cert and everything else.

Should I expect 6 months or longer? I'd like to know because I want to dodge the army draft and I turn 31 next year, so I should be ineligible if I get my citizenship status next year. It would be good to know when-abouts I should apply this year.
Still would like an answer for this.
  • I'm from New Zealand and have NZ and Australian citizenship.
  • My situation is that I have lived here in Finland 11 years now (I'm 30 in 2 months) and I have been on a P permit for almost 4 years, which was under family ties but I am now divorced and have been living with a new partner for almost 3 years.
  • I have no living interruption in the last 5 years.
  • I have only worked 2 jobs though in this time and spent 8 years studying in university (I have done 2x 4 year bachelors studies back-to-back). I am currently unemployed after just finishing my studies in December last year. Looking for work currently.
  • I also have about 18,000€ in student loan debt. But I have not been asked to pay this back and will most likely not be asked to do so until I work, or at least for another few years. I assume this would not be a problem either as I have heard they only check to see if you have refused to pay or are behind on your payments for this.
  • I have the Finnish language certificate from many years ago, gotten from YKI which qualifies me. I don't think I would have really any problem at all proving my proficiency in person at Migri either.
My main concerns are the processing time. We've got some cases of people getting it in only 2 months. I have waited so long mainly to dodge the army draft and also because I was studying for such a long period back-to-back and didn't want my studies interrupted with army. So I am curious to know what the estimated time would be. Migri now currently says 10-16 months but we are still getting reports of 2-3 months for some. If I apply and am granted this year, I would presume I still need to complete the army immediately this year... So I was considering applying in November.

Curious to hear from some people in a similar situation. Unemployed persons especially. My partner (not married) is mostly supporting me here at the moment. I wonder if I don't qualify under "sufficient means of support" as I have only personal unemployment benefit that I am getting. I do not qualify for anything else because my partner earns too much income.
I’m pretty sure you fill the criteria for applying for citizenship! But of course it is better to double check uncertain situations with migri, if you are unsure about something. Try sending them a message, they do reply those!

Regarding the processing time... Well they have now decreased it to 5-7 months. Some people get it quicker, for some it takes 18 months... There is a forum here with the same name but for 2020, people have shared a lot of their cases and you can perhaps find some useful info there and try to understand migri’s logic :)

My application moved today to stage 2 (Applied on 10.11.2020, queue number 2937). During this 3.5 months, I have not sent any extra documents such as my payslips. Do you recommend me to do so or just wait to see whether they would ask for further documents or not? any suggestion would be appreciated.

Exciting! I wouldn't send anything unless they ask for it :) what if if you send something and they will have to proof check it or so and it might take extra time...? Unless of course you have something very important to inform them?

Good luck!!!

When I proved my identity here in Rovaniemi the immigration lady said to send my payslips every month. She said that it help in case the processing takes too long

Hi everyone,

I was wondering whether I should apply as a jobseeker at TE-office as I was just recently laid off because of the government’s restrictions on restaurants. Last March I received unemployment benefits from PAM but I was wondering whether migri considered those benefits to be enough for income. I have already sent and paid for my application but won’t be visiting migri until few more weeks and I’m worry that registering as a jobseeker/ receiving benefits would affect my application negatively.

Any advices welcome.

Thank you all!
