Hello :-)

I'm Canadian, but I live in Vantaa... If I ever get up your way - maybe we can meet? There are others (from different countries) on this board from Oulu, so I'm sure they'll be in touch shortly.

Hi, I'm a Canadian who is moving to Oulu from Vancouver in October, with my wife and daughter. What age-range of friends are you looking for? My wife and I are in our fifties, and our daughter is 19. (Our 21-year-old son is joining us next spring when he finishes his college year). I have my work/residency permits, (I work for Nokia) but am having a tough time finding an apartment for us. If you know of any available 2-3-bedroom apartments, please let us know. Are you a Canuck or a Brit?

There are quite a few of us living here in Oulu - The numbers have grown since I first moved here in 98. Some of us even prefer living up here! If you are interested in getting to know more people, feel free to give me a shout and let me know if you fancy meeting up. I know that there will be alot of foreigners queing up to get into the new Leskinen when it opens in a week or so. If it is anything like the old place, it will be a really friendly mix of locals and foreigners.

You might meet some English speakers here :

Click on "Henkilöstö (Staff)! The second guy from the right (front row) is called David. He sound like an Englishman or an Australian. Some customers like to speak English with him but he speaks pretty good Finnish too.

I tried Sivakka when I first arrived, but went 6 months without any response, so unless you are a welfare case - you may not be at the top of their priority list. I found an appartment through http://www.VVO.fi They have an office in Oulu, but take a native speaker with you as they didn't speak English - Good thing with them is they only have a €250 deposit wheras others seem to want 1 or 2 months (plus commision if you go through estate agents).
There is also a good site if you are thinking of buying http://www.etuovi.com They also have some rental places but not too many.
If you are working for Nokia, try asking HR, as they should be able to sort you out something - if you are coming over on ex pat contract it should be part of the package!!
Hope this helps!!
