Birth Certificate
I need to get a birth certificate for my son.
1) Can I go to the maistratti and get such a document? It "MUST" be a birth certificate, nothing less. And it "MUST" be in English. Is this possible? It has to have both parents' addresses, nationalities etc on it.
2) I don't live in Helsinki, but my son was born there. So do you think it's possible to go to the Nurmijärvi Maistraatti (which is actually taken care of by Hyvinkää)?
3) Does anyone know how much it costs? Is it expensive?
4) Can I also get a paper, again in English stating where my child lives?
Thanks!!!

Re: Birth Certificate
Or is it the church who can give a birth certificate if the child is baptised there?

Re: Birth Certificate
You can order a population register extract using an online form:
http://www.suomi.fi/suomifi/suomi/asioi ... index.html
Unfortunately the form is only in Finnish and Swedish. However, it can be used to request the extract in English. In the request form there is field to list what information you need on it. It only seems to cost some euros so it is not that expensive. The population register extract will have the current address information on it. If you need it abroad, remember to get an apostle on it too.

Thanks.
I actually got a reply the day after emailing them.
They are sending me the extracts in English.
And thank god, my own country accepts them from Finland and Sweden.
And no, my country doesn't accept any paper work from the church here. That's odd, since Finland accepts stuff from the church in my country LOL.

Re: Birth Certificate
I once had occasion to testify in Finnish court as a witness. One of the lawyers asked me (perhaps in connection with swearing in; this was many years ago) whether I had been baptized in the Lutheran church and I said I had been baptized in a Presbyterian church. He then asked me, "But the Presbyterian church believes in the same god, doesn't it?" To which the temptation was strong to reply, "I don't know -- tell me a little about your god." But of course I simply replied "yes," which was no doubt true enough. Though upon reflection, the American god does seem more preoccupied with sexual practice while the Finnish god is apparently more preoccupied with alcohol usage.Flossy1978 wrote: And no, my country doesn't accept any paper work from the church here. As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
Re: Birth Certificate
I wonder what that lawyer would have thought about somebody like me who was born Catholic.

Re: Birth Certificate
The extract is what you want. They have them in formats with full info or limited info. But there is no such paper as a "birth certificate". Its always an extract. However, as you can ask it for visas, work permits and such, there is one they write "for foreign officials" and, as they hand-type the title into the document, the one I got reads "Birth Certificate..." In the title field as I asked nicely. So I have a "paper that does not exist"
Its always easier to give a bureaucrat what they want
You can get it notarized and apostilled as well - I think Flossy you need to in any case - So, if you get one for a newborn, it "looks pompous enough" to be an "original".
The "Finnish logic" is they don't trust old papers, but a fresh extract no older than 3 months as it also says whether you are alive or dead - so you can't forge a double identity with someone elses records...

Re: Birth Certificate
Oh that religion question in court is just if you "swear an oath" on the bible or do a "solemn oath" on the law book. on the work/tax forms its for the 4 churches that have direct taxation rights.

Re: Birth Certificate
I have gleaned from this thread that the Birth Certificate will show the address. Would the same be true if I'm wanting a copy of a birth in 1902? Maybe things have changed since then?
Will it also show, as in U.K. certificates, the maiden name of the childs Mother? I ask because I know my Grandfathers birth date, but I don't know his mothers maiden name.
I don't want to buy a copy if it won't have both pieces of this information on.
Thanks in advance for replies!

Re: Birth Certificate
Discussion here is about people alive, and how they can get computer extract from the population database that looks sort of like birth certificate. If you want to dig from the parish records old information, the maiden name of the mother should be available from the records of the parish the child was born (assuming she had one, 1902 (or 20-30 years earlier)it was not yet a legal requirement to have a family name, although it was the usual case). More accurate address information than the home parish was not recorded.geordielass wrote:I have gleaned from this thread that the Birth Certificate will show the address. Re: Birth Certificate
I you're lucky, the church records for 1902 might even be found online, although only on a site you have to pay for. Where was the child born?geordielass wrote:I have gleaned from this thread that the Birth Certificate will show the address. Would the same be true if I'm wanting a copy of a birth in 1902?
