Where to get my hair done?

Post by Lefty » Fri Jun 17, 2005 11:22 pm

Hi people, I'll make this a brief topic, I need to know where to go to have my hair done. Anyone here with braided hair or a weave, or extensions? Also, what are the good ordinary hairdressers where I can get my hair dyed, highlighted, strightened, etc. Thanks!

What kind of hair do you have? And what products do you use on your hair? Yep. It makes a difference.
Braids, extensions, weaves etc... you'll have a had time here. Very few places you can go to have them professionally done and if you do find these places ...extremely expensive. The grapevine works the best for these. But you're going to be in close to Tampere right? That means you have access to a lot of people who can do your hair. If you have kinky hair, keep away from Finnish hairdressers. Oh. And bring all your hair products from England... if you're looking for stuff like dark 'n' lovely, and extensions as well etc... If your hair isn't kinky, but more curly you can probably go to a Finnish hairdresser, but make sure they have experience in doing curly hair otherwise your curls will be ruined.

Don't worry so much Lefty (are you left handed or a socialist by the way? Just curious, only I'm a southpaw myself).

Women in Finland go to hairdressers as often as they do in Britain - in Oulu there are loads of hairdressers, and being as it is smaller than Tampere I'm guessing you will soon find yourself a couple of good places. If not then you can always go back to visit family, pick up on British stuff (I miss Cadbury's drinking chocolate) and go to the hairdressers every 6 months or or so.

I'm sure there will be good resources for immigrant women in the area being so close to Nokia, you just have to find them and join up; which your man should be able to help you with.

 I am left handed. Actually, I am both left and right (ambidextrous), but I prefer being left so my family started calling me Lefty after my continual persistance.

Yes, women in Finland go to hairdressers.... if their hair is like white people's hair. If your hair is kinky, curly etc it's very difficult to find a professional hairdresser who can do your hair. Products used for 'black' hair cannot be found that easily and they do not know how to use them here unfortunately. Try asking a Finn where you can get a weave done. They'll go, what's a weave? People think that black women on MTV have natural long, straight and wavy hair. But this is to be expected since the market for these is very small here.

I have curly, thick hair that is generally manageable without having to resort to straightening chemicals but I still remember my first experiences at a Finnish hairdresser. My curls were down to my back and it was really hard for me to do anything with my hair once I ran out of my 'normal' shampoos and conditioners plus frizz ease. So I decided it was time to cut them off... really short. When I got to the hairdresser she said oh no don't cut it off, let's do a bob. Silly me, I decided to go with her suggestion, she seemed to know what she was doing and I was in downtown Helsinki for crying out loud. Ha! You know the way, curly hair just springs up into tinier curls the more you cut it? Then she got out a blowdrier to try to do something to the bob, the curls began to open up into this frizz and then she began to get desperate and began to spray water in an effort to get the curls back! Needless to say there was no bob and I got out of there with an afro the size of... Oh dear! Anyway, I resorted to desperate measures... got a friend to do some braids and I was okay for a while. I finally got the courage to visit another hairdresser a few years later, and we had a loooong talk before I let her touch my hair and then she trimmed it just a bit, without ruining anything. She's literally learned to manage my hair and I've been going to her ever since. I hate to think what I'd do if she decided to quit what she's doing. And I get all my hair products from her as well. It's a bit more expensive than what's in the supermarkets but those don't work for me.

My sister uses chemicals to straighten her hair and she buys them from England as do a lot of our friends that have kinky hair. You can get them here from the little oriental shops but they're so much more expensive. They none of them visit Finnish hairdressers. They do each other's hair. And there's always someone who will for a small fee do your braids or weave for you. So don't worry Lefty, you'll survive. Just bring your hair products and your straightener. If you need someone to braid/weave your hair and you can't jump over to England then we can easily find someone who can do it for you in Tampere or Helsinki.

Oh! And on make-up... if your skin color is dark bring your foundation etc with you from there. Unless you want stuff with red/pink undertones.

Theres a few speciality "african haidressers" sprung up. Mainly in the big cities, though. I'd suppose in Tampere you'd find one. Theres a few stores also with make-up for darker skintones but really you are in a "bleached white" country in more senses than one. So yes, definitely bring your stuff and get someone (your mom, sis) with a shopping list of what you need/want/use so they can send you a care package without asking silly questions.
Cheers, Hank W.

A saloon with young and very innovative hairdressers is Rasta, in Tampere their shop is in Kehräsaari (the lovely island with many boutiques next to Laukontori, behind Koskikeskus mall accross the river).

The prices are reasonable and they do all that special stuff like extensions, dreads, braids etc, so perhaps they know how to deal with curls, too

My boyfriend has a naturally curly hair and in Finland he's constantly cursing the poor selection for hair-straightening products. He has ended up filling his storages when visiting home...

ummm.. I don't think so. At least not a Finnish one, but definetly at the 'exotic' hair saloons. Though I don't know that their pricing is 'reasonable'. Perhaps reasonable in Finnish standards  . I'd still use the grapevine for this.

Lefty, Colours International in Helsinki is owned by a Jamaican. There are also other foreigners there as well. they know black hair but of course they can do white hair too. I think they are on Läpinlähdenkatu. I think they are online too if u have any questions.

thanks, for that. I wondered because here in the UK, I can get my hair style and dyed, etc at an ordinary saloon once I have a weave on because its pretty much like the hair they are used to. but I will give this Colours international a try. My boyfriend doesn't know anythig about hair (what do you expect, he is a man) but he says he will try to find out for me, bless him Image
