Well, DMC, you may well be right about the 18 month limit

However I swapped my uk license for a Finnish license in 2018 and I arrived in Finland in 2010.

David

That is interesting. Can you write more about that? How exactly did you go about it and did anyone mention you being over the time limit?

Hi there
i cannot see where you get the information about an 18 month limit.

If you go here, https://ajokortti-info.fi/en/basic-info ... in-finland, there is nothing about a validity period.
if you go here, https://ajokortti-info.fi/en/basic-info ... sh-licence
likewise i can see nothing about an 18 month limit.

As I say, i swapped mine after 8 years in Finland. My situation may not be typical, because i swapped mine after I got Finnish nationality.

have fun
david

Hi to every one,

I've lived in Finland for 24 years i'm British my son is here he is a Finnish citizen, but a No Deal Brexit is Great if it makes GB Great again then it's wonderful UK does not need those overpaid leaches in Brussels. UK has always been a strong country for centuries and does not need the EU. EU needs the UK more than the UK needs them.
And Finland can throw me out anytime it's ok. :D

If your driving licence is valid for 18 months after your arrival in Finland then you can convert it to a Finnish driving licence anytime after those 18 months by taking a driving test. You don't have to take any driving lessons, just book a time and take the test.

I remember seeing it here on this forum. I have now gone back and checked again and it seems that is wrong. I apologise for quoting incorrect information. I will try to exchange my UK licence for a Finnish one.

Obviously everyone's situation and priorities can be different. For me, my driving licence is the most pressing issue by far.

Long ago I also was warned to change my driving licence within 18 months. (not this forum) It seems the law has changed.

All us Brits have to get prepared as after the 29th March we will need to apply for a RP to stay in Finland. I just wonder what the Finnish government will charge us? :?

Most likely the list price: https://migri.fi/en/processing-fees-and-payment-methods

Visa is for visiting, Residence Permit for residing.

I took my UK licence to be changed today and no problem - they didn't even ask me how long i've lived in Finland which is 20 years. It costs 35euro. The hardest part is that the standard UK licences cover many additional vehicle types such as minibus, small trucks, even trucks with trailers and this means a lot of typing of all those different vehicle categories into the system (it took about 15 minutes). In Finland the car licence does not cover those additional categories. I had a choice of preserving all the additional categories on the new Finnish licence but it will then only be valid for 5 years at a time. The other option is take off the larger vehicle types and the licence is then valid 15 years at a time.
