Is swedish practical?
Is swedish practical?
So swedish is a national language but is it practical for employment, studies, government services and day to life if you do not know Finnish?

Re: Is swedish practical?
employment: less useful than Finnish except in some areas
studies: yes (less programs available though but easier to get in)
goverment services: yes
day to day life: depends on the region
Re: Is swedish practical?
I pretty much agree with that. Except the government services, as there are people providing those services. They won't be proficient with language that they don't use.betelgeuse wrote: ↑Tue Jan 01, 2019 11:57 pmemployment: less useful than Finnish except in some areas

Indeed but then it's their job to find you someone who can. This still makes it practical. I assume the online services are as good as the Finnish ones.

Except a few places you can manage better with English than Swedish.
If you don't live in Åland, other than some study opportunities, Swedish is not going to be very helpful. Some official documents you'll find in Swedish but that's all.
Learn Finnish of possible as that's the language you'll need everywhere.

For me swedish would be easier to learn, but it is most of the time useless, since not many people can speak it in the end, but also depends which region you are. If you are on the coast to Sweden, then it might be useful. Otherwise not.
Re: Is swedish practical?
When I came to Finland many years ago (from Canada), I studied Finnish aggressively and Swedish as more of a side hobby. But my Swedish progressed at a much faster rate than Finnish so I hoped it would be useful in the Helsinki area - alas, it was not. Most Finns in Helsinki have no interest in speaking Swedish, they will much rather switch to English (if they assume you can't speak Finnish).
