Ive had that for almost 2 years now im currently self studying suomen mestari 4. I can't say any finnish sentence without a mistake for the life of me. I'm sure for finns or more talented/smarter people its easy to say that kind of stuff.
I want to move to sweden, i want to learn this beautiful language that is swedish but i can't leave my fiancee, i can't take her away from her family. I don't want to put her in a lower position in life like i currently am.

I'm glad if you all people can laugh at me and think im this pathetic failure, at least it means you're having a better life than I do.

Perhaps you need to get yourself into a position where you really need to use Finnish to survive. That's what worked for me, following ten years here working as a computer programmer, using English as my working language (ok well the working working languages were C, C++ and VB 😅).

Go to a language cafe where everyone else has the same problems, but practising helps everyone.
They are in most places unless you are in a tiny village, in the Helsinki region there are more than 50 language cafes every week.

Hey. Sorry to bump up this old thread.

I was just wondering, does anyone had ever heard of therapy offered for immigrants that are unable to learn finnish?
Move to a small town where you can’t use English so easily. Then you will learn quickly.

Hello there. I am new here. Is it hard to learn Finnish language and do local people speak English? Thanks.

It is much easier than learning Mandarin.

Many people do.
Unless you are working in IT, finding a job is usually impossible without speaking Finnish.

You wanna spend your life in Finland, you have to learn it sooner or later.
i've been here two years and i've gotten along just fine without knowing the language. sure, there have been hiccups, but it's worth it to not learn a language that i know i'll never be fluent in. and i couldn't care much less about pleasing the nationalists.

Many Finns speak English quite well but they are very self conscious about possibly making mistakes. Therefore, they are often very reluctant to use their English speaking capabilities except when they must.

What I've experienced is that nationalists are quite happy with the difficulty of finnish, because in their mind it keeps the immigrants away, and gives them something to look down upon people who don't speak it and struggle with it.

mmmm. I live at small town, called Ylikiiminki. My wife (Thai) can manage
even here with english

I have more studying to learn Thai, since it is very complicate language,
not because of grammar, but since they have own alphabets. They write
and read as they speak even (Like finnish language too)... But those alphabets...
Omg... I have a good lessons book (and CDs) for Thai, but I have also
Thai-Donald Ducks, what seems to be much funnier to read and understand.

Yep, I'm not going to stay Finland. I'm so disappointed this country since
borned here and lived here +53 years. So, we move to Thailand or Laos with
my wife when I get retirement.

Well I have just moved here, but have taken a part time Finnish class in the UK before arriving (it was once a week, not sure that even counts as part time). Finnish is super hard and I definitely feel depressed about it sometimes. I really want to learn. I feel really bad about speaking English to people in shops and stuff so I basically just try to avoid speaking to people.

I have a language assessment at the end of the month and I am hoping to start a language course within a couple of months.

I really want to learn Finnish and I feel like if I want to make a life in Finland I really need to speak the language, but I'm afraid that I will never be reach a conversational level.

Also I knew Finnish people before I moved here, we visited frequently, but since I have moved here people do not seem to be very friendly. Maybe it's just the time if the year? Finns are definitely more social and friendly in the summer. I guess that I have just had really bad luck. We spent 2 years planning to move here, but obviously did not plan for a pandemic.

Hopefully in time things will get better. I am going to do what I can to try and learn the language and hope that it doesn't drive me crazy in the process. Sometimes I feel like nothing is sinking in, but then I go to my Finnish language books and find that I am able to understand things and complete exercises with ease, so some of it must be going in. I can't have conversations with my family in Finnish, but I could have a basic conservation with a stranger if I had to and I can order a round of drinks at a bar; if there were any bars open.

I speak better Finnish after a few drinks, so maybe I'm more Finnish than I think, because Finns seems to speak better English after a few drinks or at least seem more confident.

In conclusion, yes, its very hard and I too feel like quiting all the time, but if we hang in there and keep trying we get to be part of this secret Finnish world. We get to know a language that is not widely spoken around the world, which I think is pretty cool and possibly the most appealing thing about learning Finnish.

I've been learning on and off for about a year now and I'm still a novice, but the grammar patterns in finnish are regular and so your brain should have a much easier time doing its pattern-recognition thing. I love getting stuck back into it. It feels great when you can get to the point when you can read something and guess what it might mean based off of what you already know. For all learners out there keep yourself motivated as its gonna be rough but with perseverance anyone can

My advice is: move to Sweden... Why wouldn't you? You'll get a very similar culture, very similar nature and landscape, very similar weather.... With the added bonuses of a language you can actually learn that is quite similar to English, and people that are overall nicer and friendlier. At least I wish I could.
