Oven smell - what to do??

Post by agroot » Thu Jul 25, 2019 10:42 pm

The smell has been everywhere since I burned cabbage in oven. So far I have tried:

- Cleaned oven with soda, twice. It smells like bakery now.
- Cleaned floor, walls and doors, there was no smell on them though
- Got Air purifier with activated carbon and HEPA, which cleared other kitchen odors. The VOC filter type is nowhere to be found here.
- Got big fan to help circulation
- Replaced range hood filter again
- Boiled vinegar
- Put bowls of soda / vinegar with water
- Open all ventilation exhaust holes to max and cleaned them
- Open windows everyday to max, which is like 3cm unfortunately
- Washed all clothes and towels
- Washed curtains - the smell is there but shouldn't be serious
- Open doors (nasty insects came!!), which flushed out the hard burnt odor completely but leaves the current smell which is more like the old grease smell from oven before I burned cabbage. But that smell never went out of oven until I used it. I'm pretty sure the indoor air was very fresh before.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is to use candles - the lighter is being shipped.

What else can I do? I can't find any serious source of the current smell since oven has been cleaned a few days ago. Why can't opening door for a hour flush everything out, since cold air was coming very fast?

PS: can't feel the smell after like 3 seconds staying indoor, not sure if it's normal.

EDIT: The normal ventilation / range hood is actually working fine for daily cooking now, even when I'm frying stuff. All kitchen smells could disappear in a hour, just not that grease smell. And I haven't used oven again.

Try a few pieces of charcoal. It works fine inside the fridge too.

Not knowing how your system works, but beware that your apartment might not be the only one in the same exhaust line. Thus one opens their vents to the max other won't have nearly as much flow as they should.

Just leave them on ground? No need doing anything? :D

candles didn't work and glove was partially melted by match fire (still better than my fingers). charcoal is the last option now.

How come there is no VOC (volatile organic compounds) air filter here?? The kind like Honeywell's CPZ filter. Since nobody opens window in winter to disperse cooking smell...

charcoal doesn't work!

I confirmed the oven smell is totally gone and what really helped were just opening doors to let air in and washing affected clothes and walls (just the one next to range hood).

All other methods are more or less useless and neither air purifier nor range hood can deal with that kind of smell at all.
