Driving License conversion to Finnish

Post by fintel » Sun Oct 20, 2019 1:41 pm

I have a driving license issued by another EU country (France) and would like to know if it is of any benefit to converting it to a Finnish Driving License?

You could compare at least the period of validity and cost to renew.

any benefit
You can use it as ID (collecting mail, not as a bank ID)

Wouldn't the post office accept the French one too?

The bar code with the Finnish pin makes the process so much easier.

At least for a brit, if you change to a finnish licence you can go back to the uk and drive your relatives cars (not rental cars) and you cannot be given fines for going through speed cameras. the owner of the car will get a letter asking who was driving, they will say it was you with a finnish driving licence and the UK cannot impose fines from cameras to drivers with foreign licences. this does not apply to on the spot fines from police officers though.
With rental cars the rental company will automatically pay the fine and charge it to your credit card (plus an admin fee).

I had no trouble collecting post in Finland when I had a uk licence - except it would take longer since the staff would look for the ID number which isn't obvious to them on a foreign licence. But I did have trouble getting US$ at forex since they said a foreign driving licence was not valid id needed for currency exchange purposes.
