Which is the best internet for rural area?

Post by Nightstorm2516 » Thu Jan 30, 2020 3:19 am

I love close by Karis, and me and my wife have had Elisa for years now, but we only get 1.5 MB download speeds on their 300mb mobile 4g network. I heard that Finland has the best internet connections so i'm alittle bit confused on why this connection is slow.

We plan on switching from either to DNA or Telia, but I am unsure which. DNA wants a fixed 2 year contract and I don't really want to switch either if were just going to get around the same speeds, but there doesn't really seem to be a way to test it without making a purchase.

How is your download speeds and which ISP do you use? Which do you think we should switch to?

Are you referring to prepaid phones? I am talking about home internet service.

Those connections are always slow in rural areas in my experience if you don’t have a fibre optic line. My suggestion is to get a prepaid box (mokkula) and try that out. Switching companies will likely only get the same speed because they use the same wires. Go through the 4G network gets around that limitation.

The coverage in rural areas can vary greatly. Often you are only in reach of 1 tower and if that is 4 - 5 km away the speed can drop to 10 or 20 MB for a 50+ connection. But 1.5 MB is really slow for 4g. Something is not right. I would think the problem might be in your own equipment. (wrong configuration, shielding, .....)

Sounds like you use 4G connection. Switch to fiber if possible. https://www.karistelefon.fi/fi/yksityis ... etsiosoite

My wife already has a Mokkula that she got when she got Elisa. However, its pretty old, so old that it can't stay alive for more than 10 minutes if unplugged. Also I think the router itself is pretty bad quality, considering you can't even connect a ethernet cord to it. That is partially why I was thinking DNA, because their router you can. (There router DNA Kotimokkula 4G+ WiFi B715).

I am thinking this is the case, but then again, when I use Tethering on my phone, I also get only about 2MB download speed, which also goes through Elisa, and I know my phone isn't bad equipment.

Unfortunately i'm not close enough for area of coverage. :(

Does your phone on its own (not tethered) also 2MB?

There are prepaid SIMs that can be bought in, for example, kiosks that are cheap to test other operators with.

The signal can be improved by using a device that allows for an external antenna and attaching one.

Phone, mokkula, both have eaten sim card. Mokkula or router, you can buy your own, just switch the sim card to new hardware. Eg. https://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/product ... kaksoisant

I'd start to unravel the problem with a visit to elisa.fi and open a ticket with them.

edit. 2MB... this is why I start the plan to move with quick check that there is proper copper or glass line available in new address. New buildings have such good insulation that they need effing special windows for the radio waves to go through: https://www.pihla.fi/antennilasi-ikkuna/

With supporting devices phone calls and sms can be routed through wifi. Just need to install the 4G antenna outside if there is no fixed connection.

you can check the signal with a site like this

https://www.cellmapper.net/map?MCC=244& ... lours=true

Click the base stations near your house to check the signal coverage.
I live in the countryside and had ADSL with 12m down, 1m up. I switched to DNA 4G and get 80-130m down and 10-20m up. The connection is rock solid and I have not noticed any drop out in 1year. They provided a 4G router which I connect to my own wired/wifi network at home. I did eventually get an outdoor 4G antenna (about 60e), this improved the up speed but did not make much difference to download speed.
