Studying S U O M I in Tampere

Post by simuz » Mon Mar 03, 2008 10:51 pm

Heippa!
I have ONE YEAR TIME to LEARN FINNISH properly...
I need a good course in Tampere, I work during the days...
I know the basics, as well as some words,(Finnish poika ystava & living here 1 year...)
But I want to go further than ordering at the restaurant and asking road directions...
Do not suggest books or internet, I need to go to classes, to fight my own lazyness, to meet foreigners, to have homework to do, a teacher to speak to...
Kiitos paljon!

Hi. Free, paid group, or private tutor?

IMO your best bet is to go private tutor.

You can take Finnish classes e.g.
- at the Tampere Työväenopisto: http://www.tampere.fi/top/english.pdf (but mind you, the academic year will end on 3 April for this adult education centre)
- at Tampere University (though it's possible you'll have to be a student there to get into the classes): http://www.uta.fi/laitokset/kielikeskus/finnish/
- at Tampere Summer University: http://www.kesayliopistot.fi/finncult_2008.htm#TAMPERE1 (this course should be open to everyone, not just regular university students)

Maybe there are more places that teach Finnish for Foreigners in Tampere, you could ask Google for more.

i would also like to join this request. I am interested in learning Finnish! I am attending the kielikoulu, but this is not enough, and from my previous experience I know I work better 1 on 1, so private. Does anyone know a good, but reasonably priced private teacher in Tampere???
:-)

at the university you can also join courses without being a student. but you have to pay. I guess it is 150€

another option could be the courses at Kultturikeskus UNIPOINT. They are for free. Big classes. I have no idea, when the next one will start, but normally you can enter them, whenever you want.

Unipoint no longer offer Finnish lessons :x they now recommend you apply through Tampere Työväenopisto, which as already mentioned, doesn´t start again till Autumn. I suggest that if you attend the: http://www.kesayliopistot.fi/finncult_2008.htm#TAMPERE1 Beginner & Intermediate course, back to back, in the same summer, they will ceratinly give you a rapid improvement in your Finnish skills. I have done both courses & found them very intensive (loads of homework everynight as well as very demanding course work & conversation during the lessons.) I thought they were excellent value for money, the only downside was that most of it was taught through English,(especially the Intermediate class surprisingly) rather than total Finnish immersion.
Shame I only attended those 2 courses with a 5 year break in between
Allie - whenever I speak Finnish in Tampere especially, the Finns always ask which language I am trying to speak :beamer:

Are there any classes in Helsinki? I'd like to take one, depending on the cost.
