A few years ago surfing the internet I came across a site that listed
the 10 000 most often used words in Finnish all in the most often used order as well. 10 000 is a lot of words but you might be surprised how many you know. If you want to learn Finnish it might be a good idea to memorise a few words from this list every day. The words are also in the most used form, so one verb form may be far more common than other forms but if both forms are in the top 10 000 used they will both be in this list only in seperate places. So basically also words are in their most used form as well.
See the posts below for the website

I'd love to get it, thanks!
Word frequency is something that I realized very early on is a good way to learn colloquial speech faster. Most books, because they try to structure lessons with some narrative, have you learning words like taksiasema, etc, early on. I personally will almost certainy never use that word. So I'd trade that word for a word like sitten

And even if you only learn a handful, that's still better than nothing!

Can you upload it onto a website so that people can download it?
(there are free hosting services).
uploading
I wouldn't be able to get that done for a while. So in the meantime anyone else is also free to add it to their website[/quote]I think a lot of people might be interested in this.

Reality is when you stop believing, it will not vanish.
About the most used words -list
Getting someone first to translate and ..err.. censor that list would be a great idea, since otherwise you would end up doing a lot of work, only to find out that the word you are trying to translate means something as useful as
holy tent's, probably the kind that Abraham had in the desert...?="pyhäkköteltan"
in the temple ="temppelissä"
prophet ="profeetat"
bible ="raamattu" (Ok, could actually be useful)
Some king in the bible? ="Hiskia"
A hill that has a castle on it "linnanvuori"
sabbath ="sapattina"
"fariseukset" a biblical term, can't translate that
army (a bit biblical again) "sotajoukon"
godless ="jumalattomat"
Some kind of pagan king? ="baalin"
(Sorry about the clumsy translation but you get my point)
Not to mention that the words are picked from conversation so they are not in basic forms.
I don't want to be a spoil-sport (?), many of the words in the list were really common and useful. But it seems to me that the most active discussion groups are either religious or for LAR-players or something...
