*arrgh* -am currently on section two of that Teach Yourself Finnish book (only got it on tuesday) and am TOTALLLY confussled, the word yliopisto, it has both types of vowels in! is that just an exception to the general rule, like the thousands that do that in french?
Am determined not to give up on this though, even if i make a public idiot of myself on online forums

It's a compound word, (yli-opisto) Vowel harmony only has to be true for the component parts of a compound work. There are also borrowed non-compound words such as Olympia that are disharminous.
