I pick it up at the mennonite gift and thrift store here. But that's what I was assuming no good maple syrup. So I'll bring a big jug over.

I've never tried Maple Syrup from anywhere else, but Canadian Maple Syrup is damn good! I live in Ottawa, next to Lanark County which is the "Maple Syrup Capital" of Ontario...lol...My Aunt and Uncle have a Sugar Farm near there so we have an unlimited free supply and there is nothing better than pancakes outside on a March day with syrup that was just boiled a day or two before...

Mmmmmmm!

Just saw upscale Canadian-export labeled maple syrup at Heino wholesale. The brand name is Vertmont.

Each to his own I suppose... in England we (ok I) put Lyle's golden syrup on our pancakes or waffles.. or french toast ... nam... now where was I?

Oh yes... so I tried that Dansugar stuff in a carton when I came here... no good. Instead I've been buying Maple Joe? Or that Own brand in K-Kauppa... it's passable, but a bit pricey for just a few hundred ml.

I was delighted to find Lyle's Golden Syrup on sale in Riga and picked up a couple of bottles

Wilklunfd in Turku has good stuff

I buy Maple Joe, product of Canada, at Wiklund in Turku. The flavor is good enough for me and cost is 4,50 euros for 250 grams.

But I always smuggle a few bottles back from vermont along with maple sugar candies that my MIL loves. Then resort to this Male Joe when that supply runs out.

Always a good way to earn browne points.

I just bought a bottle of generic "canadian maple syrup" courtesy of pirkka LOL  from citymarket. I have no idea how it tastes, but I'll use it in a holiday apple recipe I'm making next week. Will report back on the taste then

It is? :D Well, damn, there go my plans for tapping all of the
stinking maple trees on my plot of land! Why is ok to tap birch trees,
but not maples?

I may be wrong

As i undrestand it, maples are protected trees in Finland because they only grow in a very small region of the country. Like oak.

So it is ilegal to cut tem down or tap them. I had the same plan to tap them as i have made my own maple syrup in America.

Are they the same species of maple as used in North America?

Sorry to say, but maples are not protected in Finland.
So you can tapp maples as much as you want if you own the trees.

Tapping the trees doesn't belong to everymans rights. It's specially forbid in the law.

Golden syrup rocks - and i have a number of british recipes that need it! It is sometimes available in Behnfords in Helsinki.

I have tried this maple joe stuff and it wasnt great - but i never tried "real" canadian / US maple syrup so i dont know what it should be like.

I am going to Finland in a week and am planning on bring maple syrup as a gift. I haven't tried the "Canadian" stuff but here in the UP, if you buy the U.P Foods brand, it is very good. It's sold in locally owned grocery and merchant stores. It's way better than the general store bought stuff that you can all across the country.
