Ice golf

Post by tampereblue » Wed Feb 15, 2006 8:39 am

I can't believe I never did this before. I live right next to a huge, wide frozen lake which at the moment has a nice crisp, firm layer of snow on top. A friemd and I love playing golf for fun in the summer, and on a recent trip back to the UK I grabbed some orange golf balls and winter golf tees, now we're all set for the winter too 8)

Many times we did this in the "spring", when green grass and golf were on TV but northern Minnesota was still snow-covered and the lakes still ice-bound. I'm old enough that we pre-dated colored balls when we were kids, so we used black magic markers and colored the balls black. Even went so far as to sink coffee cans into the snow! Only worked when there was a nice crust, obviously.

No, but there is an indoor golf range near where I live in Friisilä (Espoo). They rent clubs.

Get off the Länsiväylä at Suomenoja and then take the Finoontie road north (direction Espoonkeskus). You will have Gigantti and Asko on your right. Slightly further on you will see signs to the golf range (on the right). The indoor range is in a big white "bubble". There is probably a bus that stops on Finoontie close by, but that would depend which direction you are coming from. If you are interested I'll find the name and address of the place for you. They may even have a website, not sure. We go driving there (for fun) in the summer but I have never actually used the indoor range.
