The Times doesn't waste any time in really blasting Rooney:

I think Elizondo did a good job calling the match. England did a great job playing short-handed.

i think rooney should have got a yellow card! but he sure mouthed some nice things there....!! that is what happens when u are young and a superstar!!
hey.....that daddy long legs missed a lot of open chances......?? guess who? no guess who that is
with all the build up in england i think they would have practised their spot kiks!!

rooney does show class in these comments though.

His interpretation of the situation does make sense.

It looked really aggressive to me, certainly intentional - though WHY anyone would do that in front of the ref beats me. Of course he denies it, they all do: like Thierry Henry denied diving in the game against Spain. The Rooney red card surprised me, but even with a yellow card I'm not sure he would have survived the match and certainly not the next one. What really amazes me, is the number of second chances this spoilt kid seems to be given.... He just doesn't seem to be making much progress "mentally".... how long can his supporters keep up the "he's just a kid" "golden boy" "hormones" b******t.
I watch under 15s football several times a week.... most of them are not as stupid as Rooney. It doesn't take long for them to figure out what being a teamplayer really means.

If the George Best case can be extrapolated here, until Rooney dies, penelope wrote:What really amazes me, is the number of second chances this spoilt kid seems to be given.... although they'll probably be providing him with excuses then, too.

Big difference is that George Best was always well disciplined when on the pitch, in fact when he was Rooneys age he also behaved well off the pitch.enk wrote:If the George Best case can be extrapolated here, until Rooney dies, penelope wrote:What really amazes me, is the number of second chances this spoilt kid seems to be given.... (Thanks to the guiding hand of Mat Busby).
It was when his career was ending, and later, that GB screwed up and hit the booze. Rooney seems to just have problem with discipline: full stop.
People do not become more irritable as they grow old - they simply stop making the effort to avoid annoying others.
