shipping a car to Oulu

Post by mpls » Tue Jul 04, 2006 12:19 am

Hello all,

We are planning to move from Minnesota to Oulu.
All the moving companies I have contacted, they offer to ship the car to Helsinki, Hamina or Kotka, but Oulu is not included in their lists. Well, naturally I am not too excited about dealing with customs in the Southern Finland when city of Oulu has its own harbor and customs.

I would love to hear from your experiences shipping a car from the US to any other harbor than Helsinki, Kotka or Hamina. Any emails/web sites to companies that can handle that would be appreciated as well.

I have shipped only from Tilbury (UK) & Rostock (DE) both to Hanko (FI).

I suggest you think backwards along your route....

A quick check of the Port of Oulu website

indicates that there are services from Hamburg & Antwerp to Oulu.

I suggest you contact a US company that would be able to ship your car to the Finnish agent at one of those two ports, who would then carry it onwards to Oulu.

If you are lucky you might find some company to do all the paperwork for you, if not, you may have to book two separate shippings.

At least Finnlines sails from Lübeck to Oulu (dep Thu, arr Sat), they have also scheduled routes to Kemi (ca 100 km North of Oulu).

This company seems to have a representative in Minneapolis: http://www.shippinginternational.com/default.htm and on their website it says "all cities and ports in Europe".

However, it migh turn cheaper to ship your car to a port in Southern Finland rather than Oulu, and drive it up here. You can still deal with the customs in Oulu even if you pick up the car from somewhere else.

Finnish Customs has an information leaflet about bringing removal goods incl. private vehicles to Finland at http://www.tulli.fi/en/02_Publications/ ... 006_en.pdf .
Edit: link changed (a new bulleting has come out).

Thank you very much for your feedback and those valuable links.
Once I get my stuff shipped, I will contribute my experiences to this forum as well.
