Latest (BBC News page): Zidane's mum told the Daily Mail she wants Materazzi's "bijoux de famille" served to her on a plate.

Just for the records, considering that no one among you is Italian: the Norther League and Roberto Calderoli are racists, even again Southern ITALIAN people....not only against Muslims and blacks. And they are a minority in the country, although some of them has been elected at the Parliament.

That's what we used to say about Jean Marie Le Pen.... until he ousted the socialists from the last presidential elections.

Ok, it seems to me that in whole this Zidane-Materazzi matter people in this forum just want to blame on Materazzi, because he insulted Zidane.
And with him, blame on the whole Italy as a racist country, along with the usual old stories about Italy being just mafia, pizza and sun.
Ok guys.....that's nice.

Hej steady on Vallu...I only see a couple of post inferring racism is a problem in Italy..
You notice one person refers to our own Tony Halme...
Now there is a real racist and a Finn.......There are a few like him in every country.
We have Halme..the French have Le Pen....you have Calderoli ..
Of course racism is not nice...but it is not nice here in Finland or anywhere else...I am sure that most of Italians are anti racist..as are most of us on this bb.

Thanks.
I do know that people in Finland are racists too (not all for sure, but many are against Russians or Easter Europeans) and for sure in Italy many are too. But the thing is that in Italy immigrants and Muslims aren't exactly the nicest people that there are and so it's sometimes normal that people can react in a bad way against them. Muslims killed some Italians in London and Sharm-el-Sheik bombs and they were planning terrorist attacks in Milan too, so, since them, people don't like them even more. That's not fair, but I think it's a bit natural too. Then, of course, we Italians shouldn't maybe even blame on them, as we are famous for being Mafia fellows......

Will it be just a pushed under the carpet...or will there be real action against the guilty?

I have a feeling it will be pushed under the carpet....but if they do do something then it will be next to nothing - corporate sponsors rule here....
But what shall it profit a people if they satisfy all material desires, but leave for their children nothing, only a wasteland.

I always was a bit surprised about that. Historically, Italy has been known as the crossroads between Europe and Africa, and the Roman Empire practiced religious tolerance. Even as late as WWII, the Nazis had trouble getting Fascist Italy to implement discriminatory policies against Jews, something that SS authorities attributed to the "historical tolerance" of the Italian people. What's triggered modern Italian racism?

Any moron can get climb on a stand shout a few words and have the press reporting. The more radical or extreme the higher his/her chances. Really.

Idiots did not used to get air time - or press coverage, so we did not knew about them unless they really managed to impress. Nowadays it is almost a pre-requisit that jornalists go around listening to the differeny versions of one story and they have learn to shout loud and to offer nice headlines. You don't get news where regular people say regular things. :(
Not even experts can afford to have predictable and the sort of explanations anyone would give ( "hey, I could be there on Tv sayingwhat that guy says"), they must stand out.

I agree, but the fact that those few idiots can get away with it is remarkable. Here in the US, there's no way that someone could even consider making those types of comments at all - it just isn't possible.

Waving Nazi flags - that'd be incredible, and the guy would be lynched.
